Golf: Cedar Run District Tournament

The Loudoun Valley golf team added a AAA Cedar Run District Tournament title to their 2008 resume with a seven-stroke victory over defending champion Battlefield at the Loudoun Golf and Country Club on Monday afternoon. The Bobcats, runners-up to the Vikings for the regular-season title, advanced to the Northwest Region tournament with their second-place finish.

“We were playing on our home course and we were undefeated on the year here. We definitely needed the keep this momentum going into the region tournament,” said Valley head golf coach Gary McKay on whether he thought that his team would perform considering that their region tournament berth was already locked up. “That was enough motivation right there.”

Junior Zach Bosse needed no extra motivation as he went for his second-consecutive Cedar Run individual title. Bosse birdied his final hole of the round to come in with an even-par 72, tying Battlefield sophomore Andrew Lister to force a sudden-death playoff.

“To shoot even par on this golf course today with the wind and wet conditions was just huge,” said McKay of Bosse’s performance. “To go into that playoff, he is a pretty good match play player and that is pretty much the situation that you have to look at going into a playoff like that. My money was on Zack all the way.”

It was Lister, however, that nearly ended things on the first hole. While Bosse out-drove the Bobcat off the tee, Lister’s approach shot set him up for a birdie opportunity and the win. After Bosse missed his birdie put, Lister readied himself.

“I knew that his was going to be close because he is a great putter,” said Bosse. “As soon as he hit it, I thought that it was in.”

Lister’s putt caught the high lip, circled around the hole, but never dropped, sending both golfers to the next hole.

The result of the second hole was the same — both golfers finished with par.

It was the third hole, however, that Bosse was able to take advantage of his strength off the tee. The Viking again out-drove Lister and placed his ball two feet from the hole on his second shot. Lister also found the green in two strokes, but he missed his subsequent putt and settled for par. From two feet out, Bosse sank his putt.

“Don’t blow it,” Bosse remembered thinking as readied himself for the putt. “Usually it’s pretty easy, but under the circumstances…”

As Bosse walked off the green, he was met by the other members of the Loudoun Valley team, ready to celebrate yet another victory for the Vikings.

Lister’s teammate, Jordan Pastor finished in third with a 75, while Bosse’s teammate Austin Kaseman took fourth, also with a 75 on the day. Drew Smith (Fauquier, 76), Scott Davidson (Loudoun Valley, 76), Brandon Deleonardis (Loudoun Valley, 76), Brian Hickey (Loudoun Valley, 77), Justin Riley (Battlefield, 78) and Greg Pappas (Fauquier, 78) rounded out the top ten.

Last Game: Brooke Pointe 37, Forest Park 6
Next Game:

4. Potomac Senior Panthers
Record (3-1), Last Week (4)
Last Game: Potomac 27, North Stafford 14
Next Game:
Oct. 3 against Osbourn, 7:30 p.m.

5. C.D. Hylton Bulldogs
Record (1-2), Last Week (5)
Last Game: Battlefield 27, C.D. Hylton 21
Next Game:
Sept. 26 at Forest Park, 7:30 p.m. (DigitalSports.com’s Game of the Week)
The Bulldogs have had a tough road during their last two games, playing teams with a combined record of 7-0. While both games ended in losses, the Bulldogs put 21 points on the Bobcats, something that no other team has come close to doing all year. Things don’t get any easier this week as they travel to Forest Park (2-1).

6. Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets
Record
(2-1), Last Week (7)
Last Game: Osbourn Park 23, Colonial Forge 3
Next Game:
Sept. 26 at Loudoun Valley, 7:30 p.m.
Dominique Terrell has been a breath of fresh air for the Yellow Jackets, who at times had difficulty scoring last year. Derrell scored twice for OP last week. The Yellow Jacket’s defense has been equally impressive, allowing 13 points through their first three games.

7. Freedom Eagles
Record (2-1), Last Week (10)
Last Game: Brooke Point 49, Freedom-Woodbridge 20
Next Game: Sept. 19 at Stonewall Jackson, 7:00 p.m.
Freedom’s win over Stonewall looks to be a turning point for the
program. After giving up 21 points in the third quarter, nobody on the
Eagles’ sideline believed that they were going to lose that game.

Record (1-2), Last Week (8)
Last Game: Woodbridge 31, Osbourn 3
Next Game:
Sept. 26 against Liberty, 7:30 p.m.

Next Game:
Oct. 3 against Freedom-Woodbridge. 7:30 p.m.

10. Stonewall Jackson Raiders
Record (0-3), Last Week (9)
Last Game: Freedom 25, Stonewall Jackson 24
Next Game:
Sept. 26 at Battlefield, 7:30 p.m.
The Raiders one-point loss to Freedom was especially heartbreaking considering the fact that they came back from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter to take a 24-15 lead. Stonewall Jackson played like winners last week. The scoreboard, unfourtunatly, wasn’t in their favor.

Record (2-0), Last Week (3)
Last Game: Forest Park 28, Stonewall Jackson 10
Next Game:

Midland (Sept. 15, 2008) – Battlefield and Loudoun Valley are tied for the AAA Cedar Run District regular-season golf title after the Bobcats brought home the low score at Saturday’s second district mini tournament held at Kastle Greens Golf Course in Fauquier County.

Battlefield shot a 300 team score to edge runner-up Loudoun Valley by six strokes. The Vikings from Purcellville had won the first district mini tournament in August with Battlefield as the runner-up. That leaves the two teams tied in the district race with the winner of next week’s Sept. 23 9-hole match as the district champion, which comes with an automatic bid into the Northwest Region tournament.

Last year, Battlefield edged Loudoun Valley in sudden death when they faced each other in the regular seasona and the Bobcats won both the regular season and district tournament titles. The Vikes, however, countered by capturing the Northwest Region title and qualifying for the AAA state tournament.

Saturday’s event was an 18-hole, par 72 event with Battlefield’s John Williams and Osbourn Park’s Zack Lauzon, each shooting 73. Valley placed two golfers at 74, Scott Davidson and Zack Bosse. Battlefield’s Andrew Lister and Fauquier’s Drew Smith each shot 75.

With the top two athletes for Battlefield and Valley combining for 148 strokes, the team title went down to the third and fourth scores with Battlefield getting a pair of 76’s from Blake Frost and Jordan Pastor. Valley posted a 78 by Brian Hickey and 80 by Brandon Deleonardis and Tanner Welsh. (Only the top four scores qualify in the team total out of six golfers in high school tournaments).

Host Liberty was third with 314, highlighted by three under 80 including Stephen Masssei (76), Walker Riley (78) and John Nettles (79). With a big help from Lauzon, Osbourn Park finished at 325 followed by Fauquier (330), Osbourn (339), Culpeper (374), and Stonewall Jackson (DQ).

Peter Desing shot 79 to lead the Osbourn scoring and Derek Orshoski’s 86 was low-man for Culpeper. SJ did not have four qualifying scores so the Raiders did not post a team score.

Chip Shot: The Sept. 23 match is a make-up from a rainout earlier this season. The match will actually be a quad match with Forest Park and Stonewall Jackson competing. Forest Park is a non-district opponent. The course for the match is yet to be determined.
