DigitalSports Hot Links: May 10 – May 16, 2009

We here at Prince William DigitalSports don’t just cover local sports — we love local sports. When we aren’t writing about Prince William prep teams, we’re reading about them.

DigitalSports.com’s Hot Links is a chance for us to share our top ten stories from the past week from places like the InsideNova.com, WashingtonPost.com and Fauquier.com. Sharing, after all, is a great thing and it can only help promote the great athletic scene here in Prince William County.

If you have a link or story that you think we should promote, don’t be shy — email it to Content Editor Paul Frommmelt at pfrommelt@digitalsports.com

2009 Cedar Run Track & Field Championships

By Michael D. Feldman
Osbourn Park Track and Field Head Coach

The Osbourn Park girls outdoor track and field team won their seventh team championship in eight attempts — this time in comeback fashion. Trailing defending champions Battlefield by 13 point going into the 3200-meter run, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Bobcats 21-4 and took a four-point lead going into the final event, the 4×400-meter relay. Freshman anchor Brandy Wybersky brought the stick up third for OP just ahead of the Bobcats to secure the six point victory. Junior Ariel Karabinus was named the Cedar Run Female Athlete of the Year for her record-setting effort in the 1600-meter run (5 minutes, 6.64 seconds) and her victory in the 3200-meter run (11:24.64).

On the boys side, Battlefield defended its team title once again with a dominating effort in the middle distance events. The Bobcats went 2-3-4 in the 800-meter run to put the meet out of reach. Their team depth across the spectrum of events proved too much for the rest of the District. Stonewall Jackson senior Damien Thigpen was named the Cedar Run Male Athlete of the Year for his astounding effort. The UCLA bound Thigpen closed his Cedar Run District career as the most dominate sprint/hurdler in district history. He won the 100-meter in 10.84 and set meet records in the 200-meter (21.54) and the 300-meter hurdles (37.24).

D.C. Beltway Area: Boys’ Soccer Top 10

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of May 11

1. Westfield (12-1-0) — LW: 3
The
Bulldogs earned the top seed — and a first-round bye — in the Concorde District tournament. That, coupled with four days of rain last week, kept Westfield off the pitch. But its 12-1-0 record stands the best in the DC area and allows it to hop into the top spot. Westfield faces Centreville (5-4-2) in the district semifinals on Wednesday.
2. Osbourn Park (9-1-1) — LW: 1
The
Yellow
Jackets have outscored their opponents 31-5 this season, the fewest goals
allowed among any team in the DigitalSports coverage
area, but they fell to rival Osbourn, 2-1, in their only action this week. Osbourn Park faces No. 4 Battlefield, Loudoun Valley and Fauquier this week.
3. Robinson (10-1-2) — LW: 4
The
Rams beat Fairfax 4-0 in the first round of the Concorde District Tournament after a less-than-stellar 1-0 win over the Rebels in their regular-season final. Robinson faces Cinderella Oakton, the district sixth seed of seven teams in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
4. Battlefield (10-1-2) — LW: 2
The
Bobcats posted an impressive, 2-1 win over Osbourn last week, but also suffered an inexplicable 3-2 loss to Loudon Valley. Battlefield rebounded with a 2-1 win over Stonewall, but faces No. 2 Osbourn Park before the Cedar Run District Tournament starts on May 18.
5. McLean (9-2-1) — LW: 5
The
Highlanders’
two
losses are to No. 3 Westfield, 5-2
on March 23, and
No. 10 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean earned the top seed in the Liberty District Tournament and beat eighth-seeded Marshall, 1-0, in its only game last week. It faces Jefferson, who it beat 1-0 on April 14, in the district semifinals on Wednesday.
6. South County (10-1-1) — LW: 7

The Stallions continues their climb after earning the top seed in the Patriot District Tournament and beating eight-seed T.C. Williams, 7-0, in the tournament opener on Monday. South County faces Annandale (6-5-3) in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Stallions beat the Atoms, 1-0, on March 31.
7. Woodbridge (8-2-3) — LW: 6

The Vikings beat Freedom-Woodbridge, 3-1, in their only game last week. Woodbridge faces Potomac (2-5-1) and C.D. Hylton (1-5-2) before the Cardinal District Tournament starts on May 18.
8. Stone Bridge (11-1-1) — LW: 8
The
Bulldogs
have the third-best scoring defense in the Northern Region (Robinson
and South County) and have an eight-match unbeaten streak. Stone Bridge beat Marshall, 3-1; South Lakes, 2-1; and Woodson, 3-1, last week — the last of which was a first-round playoff game. It faces Langley (8-2-2) in a promising Liberty District semifinal on Wednesday.
9. Wakefield (11-1-2) — LW: 10

The Warriors opened eyes around the Northern Region with their 5-1
dismantling over the previously unbeaten — and previously fifth-ranked
— Eagles on on April 24, and have just recently regained their form. Wakefield beat Herndon, 2-0 on Senior Night, and Hayfield, 1-0, last week. It earned a first-round National District Tournament bye and draws Yorktown (6-6-3) in semifinals on Wednesday. The Warriors are the second-highest scoring team in the Northern Region (Westfield).
10. Gar-Field (6-1-4) — LW: N/A
The Indians had a pair of ties last week with Forest Park, but also beat Freedom-Woodbridge, 3-1. Only a Tuesday-night game with Hylton remains on Gar-Field’s regular-season schedule and it is the top team in the Cardinal District.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Edison (8-2-1)
Langley (8-2-2)
Osbourn (8-4-1)

Eagles Beat Yellow Jackets For First Time in Five Years

Click on the “Photos” and “Videos”
links above for pictures and video highlights.

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Editor

For the last four years, Osbourn boys soccer senior captain Travis Pittman has been constantly teased by his two older brothers about the Eagles’ inability to beat neighborhood rival Osbourn Park. Both his brothers were stars for Osbourn — notching wins over the Yellow Jackets on more than a few occasions. That’s not to say that Pittman hasn’t been successful during his time with the Eagles. His brothers never lead the Eagles to a state tournament berth as Pittman — a West Virginia University commit — did last year. But never beating Osbourn Park? That’s a cardinal sin in the Manassas-area rivalry between the two schools and worthy of some teasing.

After the Eagles 2-1 overtime win over the Yellow Jackets’ on a wet Monday night, Pittman’s brothers are going to have to come up with some new material to use against their younger brother. It was the Eagles’ first victory over the Yellow Jackets in five years, long enough for Osbourn head coach Dave Larson to lose track.

“I don’t know how long it’s been. When we first came into the district, it was kind of back and forth,” said Larson.
“They’ve had some really nice players come through. They’ve had some
really good teams that went to states a couple
of times. We had some good teams but we just weren’t able to keep up with them.”

When Osbourn Park junior Nicholas Surkamp scored in the 44th minute to put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0 — and that score remained midway through the second half, despite constant pressure by the Eagles — it looked as though the Eagles were doomed to suffer another defeat at the hands of their rivals.

That all changed when junior Nelson Almendares positioned himself under a feed from Pittman at the far goalpost and headed it past Osbourn Park goalkeeper Dylan Leygraaf to tie the game up in the 61st minute. Almendares started the season on the back line for the Eagles, but was moved up to the wing for the Eagles’ game against the Yellow Jackets.

“We changed quite a few things tonight just for them to see how they would work out,” said Larson. “We know that they have a lot of speed on the wings. Sometimes the way
to counteract speed is with speed. We felt that if we could get some
speed on the corners, we could keep the ball down there a little bit
and keep their speed away from our end.”

That change in the lineup not only helped the Eagles tie the game, but helped them score the game-winner early in the first overtime period. In a play that mirrored his game-tying goal, Almendares headed in the game-winner at the far post on a cross from junior Tyler Cook to put the Eagles up for good.

“Knowing that I scored the two goals to win the game, I feel so pumped up,” said Almendares. “It means a lot to me. I feel so great right now.”

After scoring the game-winning goal, Almendares was mobbed by his teammates. The first player there was Pittman, who planted a kiss right on Almendares’s cheek.

“Finally, we won,” said Pittman. “Finally, I can say that I’ve beaten them.”
