Last Week: Woodbridge 35, C.D. Hylton 6
Next Game:
 Oct. 31 against Freedom-Woodbridge, 7:30 p.m.
The Vikings’ next two opponents currently have a combined 6 wins. The undefeated Vikings have 8 wins. The chances for Woodbridge to finish the regular season undefeated are pretty high.

2. Battlefield Bobcats
Record (8-0, 5-0), Last Week (2)
Last Week: Battlefield 36, Fauquier 31
Next Game:
Oct. 31 at Culpeper County, 7:30 p.m.
While the Vikings’ next opponents have a combined 6 wins, the Bobcats will face off against Culpeper County (0-8) and Loudoun Valley (1-7) in the last two weeks of the regular season. This is a perfect time for Battlefield to get healthy for the postseason.

Last Week: Woodbridge 35, C.D. Hylton 6
Next Game:
Oct. 31 against Potomac, 7:30 p.m. (DigitalSports Game of the Week)

Next Game:
Oct. 31 at C.D. Hylton, 7:30 p.m. (DigitalSports Game of the Week)

Jessica Lowman couldn’t really process what had just happened. With time running out in the first overtime period during the Osbourn Park field hockey team’s Cedar Run District championship game against Liberty, Lowman took a pass from Annie Lynch and rifled it past the Eagles’ diving goalkeeper to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 win and the Cedar Run District trophy. Even before the ball hit the back of the cage, the Yellow Jackets’ fans began to celebrate, but Lowman looked stunned.

“I really can not believe that just happened,” said Lowman, who was swallowed by a crowd of her celebrating teammates after the goal. “Just because it is the championship game and you are putting all you can into it. Sometimes it doesn’t always come out the way that you would want it too but this time it did. I made the winning goal.”

Lowman’s goal ended an amazing run by the Yellow Jackets in the district tournament. Finishing the regular season with a 5-5 record, the Yellow Jackets beat Battlefield, a team that went 2-0 against Osbourn Park during the regular season, to advance to the finals.

“They were green at the beginning of the year. They were a work in progress,” said head coach Kate Thomas. “I don’t think that I’ve ever had team peak right when they were supposed to. I don’t know what we did. I’ll have to go back and look.”

The Yellow Jackets will host their first-round game in the Northwest Region tournament against Cardinal District runner up Woodbridge on Tuesday night.

News: VHSL Looks Into New State Alignments

The Virginia High School League is exploring the possibility of changing the way it aligns teams in state, looking at a proposal to divide the state into five divisions. Currently the VHSL has three classifications for most sports (A, AA and AAA) with football split into two divisions in each classification and basketball also split among some classifications.

The new alignment would divide the state into five divisions based on enrollment and then each of those five divisions would be divided twice, into “super sections (East and West)” and sections (A-B, C-D) to create compressed geographical playing areas of teams with like enrollment.

In the proposed alignment, Prince William County schools will fall in the following divisions.
Division 2 — Eastern (C)
Manassas Park
Division 4 — Western (B)
Brentsville, Freedom, Potomac,
Division 5 — Western (B)

Battlefield, C.D. Hylton, Forest Park, Gar-Field, Osbourn, Osbourn Park, Stonewall Jackson, Woodbridge

Four open Q&A sessions are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to noon on:

  • Nov. 4 @ Western Albemarle High School
  • Nov. 6 @ Lafayette High School
  • Nov. 17 @ Osbourn Park High School
  • Nov. 17 @ Salem High School

Pre-registration required so that space needs can be determined. Contact Linda Taylor to register for any of these dates.

—Below is the VHSL’s proposal to change from the current three classifications to five divisions—

VHSL School Division Proposal

Current R & R alignment for the 2009-10 Cycle

Enrollments within each classification range from:

  • Group A — Mt. Rogers (28) to Nandua (736) — 104 Schools
  • Group AA — Cenral (743) to E.C. Glass (1543) — 104 Schools
  • Group AAA — J.E.B. Stuart (1545) to Westfield (3171) — 103 Schools

Within the three classifications, football and selected basketball participate in Division Play.

  • D-1 — Mt. Rogers (28) to Cumberland (460)
  • D-2 — Patrick Henry-GS (466) to Nandua (736)
  • D-3 — Central (743) to King George (1190)
  • D-4 — Caroline (1200) to E.C. Glass (1543)
  • D-5 — J.E.B. Stuart (1545) to Massaponax (1893)
  • D-6 — Prince George (1895) to Westfield (3171)

Within each of these classifications/divisions a number of schools have received special permission to play up or down based upon specific issues related to geography or other unusually compelling reasons as determined by the R & R Committee. Due to district alignment and configuration, school teams are committed to a required number of district contests for possible post season consideration or dependence upon a rating system (football) and/or district tournaments in other sports. Depending upon the number of schools within a district, non-district contests with schools in other districts, regions or classifications may be limited or not possible.

Would it not be more desirable for schools to have greater flexibility in scheduling and still have increased opportunities to enter the post season?

Every two years the R & R committee attempts to balance the current system considering:

  1. School Enrollment
  2. Geographic Location
  3. Potential Team Travel
  4. Preservation of critical class time for students

The VHSL and the R & R committee have no control of:

  1. School Locations
  2. New School Construction
  3. The Closing or consolidation of schools

Given the unique shape of the Commonwealth, schools within a specific classification may be separated by significant distances. For example:

  • From Thomas Walker High School  to Chincoteague — 603 miles
  • From James Wood High School to Bluestone High School — 227 miles
  • From Loudoun Valley High School to G.W. Danville High School — 257 miles

Trying to maintain equity given the considerations of school size, geography and travel is a formidable task at best.

VHSL Staff offers that:
League Staff, R & R and member schools have been for many years thinking…about the box…inside the box…but need to begin thinking outside the box.

Consider the following “out of the box” proposal:

  • Each of 5 Divisions (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are divided into two Super Sections (Eastern & Western).
  • Each Super Section  is divided into two Sections (A & B) or (C & D).
  • Each Section is composed of schools of similar enrollment and geographic proximity (as reasonably possible).

Classification, student enrollment and the number of schools in each division would be:

  • Division 1 — 1 to 450 students (48 schools)
  • Division 2 — 451 to 800 students (63 schools)
  • Division 3 — 801 to 1,300 students (68 schools)
  • Division 4 — 1,301 to 1,800 students (66 schools)
  • Division 5 — 1,801+ students (67 schools)

What would happen with current Districts?
Member schools would have the flexibility to maintain current district membership/alignment, reorganize districts, or be independent of a district. Postseason participation would be determined by League criteria or by criteria developed by the member schools in each Section.

ANY member school would be able to schedule ANY school they desired based upon:

  • Gate receipts
  • Long standing rivalries
  • Geographic considerations
  • Travel limitation
  • Local school preference
  • Current district alignment

How then would teams advance to the post season?
VHSL Staff recommends:

Advancement and seeding within each Section based upon and in the following order:

  • Overall regular season record
  • Winning percentage within the Division
  • Winning percentage within the Section / Super Section

Ties would be broken in the following order:

  • Head to head competition
  • Winning percentage vs. common opponents
  • Winning percentage vs. opponents in higher Divisions
  • Coin flip

The five division format would be used in all sports in which the vast majority of schools in each Division participate. In those sports where participation is more limited, it would be possible to combine the schools in two or more Divisions to provide as much equity as possible.

Finances
All net income derived from championships and Super Section playoffs would be retained for the operation of the League. Net income derived from Section athletic playoffs would be combined by season (fall, winter, spring).

  • 35% of the net income would be sent to VHSL
  • 65% of the net income would be retained by the section

Last Week: Woodbridge 53, Forest Park 19
Next Game:
 Oct. 24 at C.D. Hylton, 7:30 p.m
The Vikings have scored over 50 points in their past two games and show no signs over slowing down. This week brings a big test, however, as the Vikings fight it out for sole possession of first place in the Cardinal District with C.D. Hylton.

2. Battlefield Bobcats
Record (7-0, 4-0), Last Week (1)
Last Week: Battlefield 17, Osbourn 14 (OT)
Next Game:

Record (5-2, 2-0), Last Week (3)
Last Week: C.D. Hylton 23, Freedom-Woodbridge 3
Next Game:
 Oct. 24 against Woodbridge, 7:30 p.m.

4. Potomac Senior Panthers
Record (4-3, 0-2), Last Week (4)
Last Week: Gar-Field 26, Potomac 23 (OT)
Next Game:
 Oct. 24 against Forest Park, 7:30 p.m.

Last Week:
Battlefield 17, Osbourn 14 (OT)

Next Game: Oct. 25 at Loudoun Valley, 1:30 p.m.

Next Game:
Oct. 24 at Potomac, 7:30 p.m.

When the Battlefield boys cross country team won their first Cedar Run District title last year, the goal was to earn that first trophy. On Tuesday afternoon at Culpeper County High School, that goal changed into maintaining a tradition of winning.

“We are trying to build a tradition. We feel like we are establishing something,” said Battlefield coach Joe Huddle (full interview).

Behind top five finishes from Darren Driscoll and Kyle Beach, the Bobcats (38 points) did just that, winning their second consecutive Cedar Run District title by edging out second-place Osbourn Park (56 points) and third-place Fauquier (83 points).

Driscoll finished the race with a time of 17 minutes, 2 seconds, right behind front-runners Talbot Armstrong (1st, 16:45) of Fauquier and Nolan Compton (2nd, 16:50) of Osbourn Park. The Bobcats’ Beach (5th, 17:11), Garrick Clemente (6th, 17:26) and Mattheww Shaughnessy (7th, 17:28) all posted top-seven times to help secure the Bobcats’ victory.

“It was certainly one of the better performances that I have seen [Darren] have,” said Huddle of Driscoll. “He was up in the front about halfway through the race and faded just a little bit, but if you fade and come in third, you’ve had a pretty good day.”

For Battlefield, the tradition of winning doesn’t stop at the district level.

“They want to take it one step more. Hopefully we can qualify for states. That has been more of their goal than a district title, to qualify for the next level,” said Huddle.

Fauquier’s Armstrong took home the individual title with Compton coming in five seconds behind (video). Compton’s teammate, Richard Arena rounded out the top five with a time of 17:06.
