Midland (Sept. 15, 2008) – Battlefield and Loudoun Valley are tied for the AAA Cedar Run District regular-season golf title after the Bobcats brought home the low score at Saturday’s second district mini tournament held at Kastle Greens Golf Course in Fauquier County.

Battlefield shot a 300 team score to edge runner-up Loudoun Valley by six strokes. The Vikings from Purcellville had won the first district mini tournament in August with Battlefield as the runner-up. That leaves the two teams tied in the district race with the winner of next week’s Sept. 23 9-hole match as the district champion, which comes with an automatic bid into the Northwest Region tournament.

Last year, Battlefield edged Loudoun Valley in sudden death when they faced each other in the regular seasona and the Bobcats won both the regular season and district tournament titles. The Vikes, however, countered by capturing the Northwest Region title and qualifying for the AAA state tournament.

Saturday’s event was an 18-hole, par 72 event with Battlefield’s John Williams and Osbourn Park’s Zack Lauzon, each shooting 73. Valley placed two golfers at 74, Scott Davidson and Zack Bosse. Battlefield’s Andrew Lister and Fauquier’s Drew Smith each shot 75.

With the top two athletes for Battlefield and Valley combining for 148 strokes, the team title went down to the third and fourth scores with Battlefield getting a pair of 76’s from Blake Frost and Jordan Pastor. Valley posted a 78 by Brian Hickey and 80 by Brandon Deleonardis and Tanner Welsh. (Only the top four scores qualify in the team total out of six golfers in high school tournaments).

Host Liberty was third with 314, highlighted by three under 80 including Stephen Masssei (76), Walker Riley (78) and John Nettles (79). With a big help from Lauzon, Osbourn Park finished at 325 followed by Fauquier (330), Osbourn (339), Culpeper (374), and Stonewall Jackson (DQ).

Peter Desing shot 79 to lead the Osbourn scoring and Derek Orshoski’s 86 was low-man for Culpeper. SJ did not have four qualifying scores so the Raiders did not post a team score.

Chip Shot: The Sept. 23 match is a make-up from a rainout earlier this season. The match will actually be a quad match with Forest Park and Stonewall Jackson competing. Forest Park is a non-district opponent. The course for the match is yet to be determined.
