Football: Final Prince William Power Rankings

By Paul Frommelt
Prince William County Content Manager
pfrommel@digitalsports.com

1. Woodbridge Vikings
Record (10-0, 5-0), Last Week (1)
Last Week: Woodbridge 50, Gar-Field 21
Next Game:
Nov. 14, Northwest Region Div. 6 Semifinals against C.D. Hylton, 7:30 p.m.
How dominant have the Bulldogs been this year? They have outscored opponents 400-107. Their defense has held opponents to single-digit points six times, including two shutouts. Their offense has scored over 40 points six times — over 49 points three times. The Vikings beat their Northwest Region semifinals opponent, C.D. Hylton, 35-6, on Oct. 24.

2. Battlefield Bobcats
Record (10-0, 7-0), Last Week (2)
Last Week: Battlefield 42, Loudoun Valley 0
Next Game:
Nov. 14, Northwest Region Div. 6 Semifinals against Osbourn, 7:30 p.m. (DigitalSports Game of the Week)
Speaking of dominant, the Bobcats have been just as tough in the Cedar Run District. Despite two close games against Fauquier and Osbourn, Battlefield has outscored opponents 337-104 and has recorded five shutouts. The Bobcats set school records in points allowed and points scored this year. True, only four of their opponents finished the year with winning records, but the power points don’t lie and the two-time district champs finished at the top of the heap in the Northwest Region.

Record (7-3, 4-1), Last Week (3)
Last Week: C.D. Hylton 29, Forest Park 0
Next Game:
Nov. 14, Northwest Region Div. 6 Semifinals at Woodbridge, 7:30 p.m.
Did anybody besides the Bulldogs think that Hylton would be the No. 3 seed in the region tournament this season? After a tough 2007 campaign with only three wins and a 1-2 record to start the year, the Bulldogs have bounced back to win seven games. While Woodbridge beat the Bulldogs by 29 points during the regular season, beating a team twice in a season is always hard.

4. Osbourn Eagles
Record (6-4, 6-1), Last Week (4)
Last Week:
Osbourn 28, Osbourn Park 21

Next Game: Nov. 14, Northwest Region Div. 6 Semifinals at Battlefield, 7:30 p.m. (DigitalSports Game of the Week)
If it wasn’t for the Bulldogs, Osbourn would be the comeback team of the year. After a 4-6 season — one year removed from a Div. 6 state title — the Eagles rebounded to win six games and advance to the Northwest Region tournament. The Eagles also have a good shot of advancing past Friday as they forced Battlefield into overtime during their first meeting of the year.

5. Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets

Record (4-6, 2-5), Last Week (6)
Last Week: Osbourn 28, Osbourn Park 21
Next Game:
Season Completed
The Yellow Jackets’ season held such promise, as they started the season 4-2 and were looking towards a playoff berth since 2003. A four-game losing streak to end the season, however, killed any chance of that. The good news is that OP has plenty of young talent returning next year, including quarterback Dominique Terrell.

6. Potomac Senior Panthers

Record (5-5, 1-4), Last Week (5)
Last Week: Freedom-Woodbridge 22, Potomac 21
Next Game:
Season Completed
Potomac was another team that started out hot in the first half of the season but struggled the rest of the way. The Div. 5 state finalists in 2007 started 4-1, but lost four their last five to fall out of playoff contention. The young Panthers will be at home during the playoffs for the first time in three years. Like the Yellow Jackets, Potomac is still young and will return a lot of talent next year.

7. Forest Park Bruins
Record (4-6, 2-3), Last Week (7)
Last Week:
C.D. Hylton 29, Forest Park 0
Next Game:
Season Completed
If it wasn’t for Forest Park’s 5-5 2007 season, this year’s 4-6 campaign could be considered a step in the right direction. The Bruins posted their second-best record in school history, but they expected more after last year’s five-win season.

8. Gar-Field Indians
Record (4-6, 2-3), Last Week (8)
Last Week: Woodbridge 50, Gar-Field 21
Next Game:
Season Completed
Expect better things from the Indians next year, as head coach Thomas Gryder will be in his second year at the helm.

9. Freedom Eagles
Record (3-7, 1-4), Last Week (10)
Last Week: Freedom-Woodbridge 22, Potomac 21
Next Game: Season Completed
Big, big win for the Eagles over Potomac at the end of the year.

9. Stonewall Jackson Raiders
Record (3-7, 3-4), Last Week (9)
Last Game: Stonewall Jackson 40, Culpeper County 6

Next Game: Season Completed
You’ll notice that I have Freedom and Stonewall tied for ninth. It was a pretty good year for Prince William football when there were two undefeated teams and the teams with the fewest wins still put together 3-7 seasons.

Softball: Jennie Finch Clinic Coverage

By Phil Murphy
Senior Multimedia/Content Manager, Washington D.C. Metro Area

*CLICK HERE for photos from the event.

The lobby of the Diamond Sports Training facility in Sterling, Va., was saturated with elementary and middle school softball pitchers early Sunday morning. All had at least one piece of memorabilium in her possession, standing and chatting in nervous anticipation.

One in particular was able to balance five softballs in her nine-year-old arms, not missing a beat in conversation.

“These two are for Chelsea and Meghan,” said the girl with an irrevocable smile, circling the diamond of her club team’s starting infield by name. “This is for Ashley and my sister.”

She then nodded to the ball, hat, rolled-up poster and jersey tucked under her right arm.

“And these are for me.”

Just seconds after the giddy gaggle was ushered down to the facility’s back quarters, the source of the girls’ excitement walked through the employee-entrance glass doors.

Bearing incorrigible grace on a 6-feet, 1-inch, Olympic frame, the most famous softball player of all-time — and arguably the sport’s most dominant force ever — Jennie Finch, had arrived for one of her myriad softball clinics that she hosts nationwide each year.

“I play softball and I’m living my dreams out,” Finch said. “It’s so exciting to be able meet the future softballers and see the excitement of our game and of U.S.A. softball.

“Just to be able to be a positive role model to these young girls, it’s an incredible honor. It’s the best part about doing what I do.”

Finch, who was in town for a national autograph signing event, agreed to host the clinic on short notice and with smaller-than-typical attendance. Her two-day camp in Williamsport, Pa. in early December had sold out its 400 slots over three weeks ago.

“When we contacted her, she was really excited about it,” said John Lechler, Director of Softball Operations at Diamond Sports Training. “She’d basically rather do this than an autograph show … I was kind of expecting a little bit of a prima donna attitude, but she was awesome. She answered every question and it was absolutely great to have her in here.”

Because of the haste in organizing the clinic, an important vacancy wasn’t filled until the week of the event: Finch’s catcher for her pitching demonstration. So Stone Bridge alumnus Kayla Lechler, a 2007 AAA Virginia first-team all-state selection, was asked to fill in and agreed — without much resistance.

“It was an amazing opportunity to catch for someone who not only has been in the Olympics, but has done so well in college,” said Lechler, a freshman at Columbia University in New York, N.Y. “I was also very nervous because, of course, she’s going to be the best pitcher I ever caught for.”

Finch, 28, even asked to exchange numbers with Lechler in case she needs a training partner whenever Finch travels to New York.

“It’s great for them to know I was once in their shoes, dreaming of being an Olympian,” said Finch, whose clinic on Sunday was sandwiched between similar demonstrations in New York and Chicago and a charity luncheon Indianapolis within a week. “[I’m] encouraging them to go after their dreams and share the love of our game. There’s only a select few that will go on to be Olympians, but it’s about the game.

“This game teaches you so much beyond the playing field, such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership.”

The autograph session, not surprisingly, doubled its estimated duration. But Finch signed, and signed, posing for countless photos with an admirable genuineness.

She even momentarily stopped her question-and-answer session to offer an autograph to a girl who had to leave early.

The event left moms misty-eyed and the girls beaming.

“It’s special. You almost have to pinch yourself every time [those reactions] happen,” said Finch, 42-2 all-time when pitching for the U.S. National team. “There are so many great things this game has given me and if I can relay those things to younger girls — and share the excitement of it — then it’s great.

“And I want to do it.”

The Osbourn Eagles entered halftime trailing Osbourn Park, 14-13, in a game that they had to win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

“If you want to be a playoff team and keep this season going, you are going to have to fix what was broken in the first half,” Osbourn head coach Steve Schultze told his team during the half of Friday night’s game at Osbourn Park.

What was broken, according to Schultze, was the Eagles’ ability to stop Osbourn Park standout quarterback Dominique Terrell, who rushed for a 25-yard touchdown and threw for a 10-yard score in the first half.

“He is a very elusive runner. Out in space, he was one of the best kids that we’ve played against this year,” said Schultze. “He was hurting us.”

On the other side of the ball, however, Schultze didn’t want to change a thing.

“If it’s not broke, you don’t have to fix it,” he said, in reference to giving the ball to Osbourn senior Jerell McFadden. “We put the ball in McFadden’s hands and he is one of the best ball players in my mind. The kid plays with so much heart and passion. He is a leader on this team.”

In the second half, the Eagles’ defense forced three turnovers and kept Terrell scoreless on the ground. On offense, the Eagles put the ball in McFadden’s hands 32 times and the senior scored twice to give the Eagles a 28-21 win and a trip to the Div. 6 Northwest Region tournament.

“We wanted this so bad,” said McFadden, who rushed for 238 yards and three touchdowns. “We knew that we had to come out here and get this victory.”

After a Tyler Schultze 25-yard field goal to start the scoring in the first quarter, the game turned into a showcase of Terrell and McFadden’s big-play ability. The Yellow Jackets’ star broke a 25-yard run in the second quarter to give OP a 7-3 lead. McFadden responded with a 33-yard run of his own. Terrell then found wide receiver Pat Derenda for a 10-yard touchdown pass and Schultze hit a 22-yard field goal to make the score 14-13 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, McFadden found the end zone twice in the fourth, on runs of 65-yard and 2-yards, to put the Eagles up for good. On Osbourn’s final scoring drive, McFadden ran the ball on 10 of the Eagles’ 11 plays.

“He is a good football player and we are going to get the ball in his hands,” said Schultze.

The win secured the No. 4 seed in the Northwest Region tournament this Friday against the undefeated Battlefield Bobcats. The Eagles lost to Battlefield, 17-14, on Oct. 17, in what was Battlefield’s closest contest of the year.

“We have to go back to reviewing film and see what they did against us. We feel like we played pretty well,” said Schultze. “We felt like we played pretty good football and had a chance to win but we didn’t finish the football game. We have to go out and play all four quarters.”

C.D. Hylton (7-3, 4-1), Forest Park (4-6, 2-3)
Game Notes: The Bulldogs clinch the No. 3 seed in the Div. 6 Northwest Region tournament with a solid victory over Forest Park. Quarterback Joel Himan connects with Dayne Mullins for three touchdowns, while the Hylton defense allowed only 75 total offensive yards to the Bruins. (Source: Potomac News)

Freedom-Woodbridge 22, Potomac 21

Freedom-Woodbridge (3-7, 1-4), Potomac (5-5, 1-4)
Game Notes: The Eagles finish their most successful season in school history with an upset over Potomac in double overtime. Interim head coach Greg Johnson opted to go for a two-point conversion in the second overtime after quarterback Keith Johnson found Tre Brinson for an 8-yard touchdown pass rather than kick an extra point that would have sent the game into its third overtime. Keith Johnson found the end zone on a QB keeper to give the Eagles the win. With wins by G.W. Danville and Liberty-Bealton, the loss knocks the Panthers out of Div. 5 playoff contention. Battlefield (10-0, 6-0), Loudoun Valley (1-9, 1-6)
Game Notes: The Bobcats hold onto the No. 1 seed in the Div. 6 Northwest Region tournament with a 42-point drubbing of the Vikings. All six of the Bobcats’ touchdowns come on the ground with Adrian Ingram, Gerald Khosa and Sheldon Tapscott each finding the end zone twice. Ingram leads the way with 137 yards on the ground and the Battlefield defense blanks an opponent for the fifth time this year. The Bobcats claim the Cedar Run District title and will face Osbourn in the first round of the Northwest Region tournament.

Football: Prince William Power Rankings, Week 10

By Paul Frommelt
Prince William County Content Manager
pfrommel@digitalsports.com

1. Woodbridge Vikings
Record (9-0, 4-0), Last Week (1)
Last Week: Woodbridge 45, Freedom-Woodbridge 20
Next Game:
Nov. 7 at Gar-Field, 7:30 p.m.
The Vikings have won three of the last five games against the Indians, including a 38-20 win over Gar-Field in the Northwest Region tournament. The Vikings, who have outscored opponents 350-86 this season, are playing for an undefeated season and momentum heading into the region tournament. The Indians, who have won the last two regular-season contest against the Vikings, are still holding out hope of sneaking into the postseason and a win against the Vikings will go a long way to help.

2. Battlefield Bobcats
Record (9-0, 6-0), Last Week (2)
Last Week: Battlefield 45, Culpeper County 0
Next Game:
Nov. 7 against Loudoun Valley, p.m.
The Bobcats are on the verge of the program’s first ever undefeated regular season. A win against the 1-8 Vikings will do the trick and secure the Bobcats the No. 1 seed in the Div. 6 Northwest Region tournament.

Record (6-3, 3-1), Last Week (3)
Last Week: C.D. Hylton 17, Potomac 0
Next Game:
Nov. 7 against Forest Park, 7:30 p.m.
What a difference a year makes. Last season, the Bulldogs finished out the year with a three game losing streak and finished with a program-low 3-7 record. With a win over Forest Park on Friday night, the Bulldogs will hang onto the No. 3 seed in the Div. 6 region tournament and finish with a 7-3 record. In Hylton’s first meeting with the Bruins this year (in a non-district match-up), they won easily, 42-14.

4. Osbourn Eagles
Record (5-4, 5-1), Last Week (5)
Last Week:
Osbourn 48, Stonewall Jackson 21

Next Game: Nov. 7 at Osbourn Park, 7:30 p.m. (DigitalSports Game of the Week)
Like the Bulldogs above, the Eagles have gone from a losing record in 2007 to on the verge of a playoff berth in 2008. Osbourn beats Osbourn Park on Friday night and they’re the No. 4 seed in the Div. 6 Northwest Region tournament. A few weeks ago, I mentioned the Eagles’ tough schedule this season. Let’s look at it again. The four teams the beat Osbourn this season have a combined record of 31-5.

5. Potomac Senior Panthers
Record (5-4, 1-3), Last Week (4)
Last Week: C.D. Hylton 17, Potomac 0
Next Game:
Nov. 7 at Freedom-Woodbridge, 7:30 p.m.
As of right now, five of the eight Northwest Region playoff spots are from Prince William County. Exactly half of Prince Williams’ teams will be heading to the postseason. Three of those teams, including Potomac, hail from the Cardinal District. If all five teams end up making it in, that’s quite an accomplishment.

Record (4-5, 2-4), Last Week (6)
Last Week: Fauquier 38, Osbourn Park 17
Next Game:
Nov. 7 against Osbourn, 7:30 p.m. (DigitalSports Game of the Week)
Things look grim of for the Yellow Jackets this season. After three straight losses and a tough game against Osbourn coming up, OP is going to need a lot of help to make it to the postseason this year. The future, however, looks bright for the Yellow Jackets. They have already surpassed their win total from last year and have outscored last year’s team by 40 points with one game remaining. Quite a few of their playmakers, including QB Dominique Terrell will be back next year.

7. Forest Park Bruins
Record (4-5, 2-2), Last Week (7)
Last Week:
Forest Park 23, Gar-Field 14
Next Game:
Nov. 7 at C.D. Hylton, 7:30 p.m.
A win over C.D. Hylton would get the Bruins back to .500 on the year and give them quite a bit of momentum heading into next year. Remember, this team is still only two years removed from a winless season.

8. Gar-Field Indians
Record (4-5, 2-5), Last Week (8)
Last Week: Forest Park 23, Gar-Field 14
Next Game:
Nov. 7 against Woodbridge, 7:30 p.m.
Never underestimate the power of revenge. Last year, the Vikings knocked the Indians out of the Northwest Region playoffs. While the Indians’ chances of advancing to the postseason this year are slim, how nice would it be for Gar-Field to ruin the Vikings’ perfect season?

9. Stonewall Jackson Raiders
Record (2-7, 2-4), Last Week (9)
Last Game: Osbourn 48, Stonewall Jackson 21

Next Game: Nov. 7 against Culpeper County
Since running back Damien Thigpen returned, the Raiders have gone 2-2. In four games, Thigpen already has ten touchdowns.

10. Freedom Eagles
Record (2-7, 0-4), Last Week (10)
Last Week: Woodbridge 45, Freedom-Woodbridge 20
Next Game: Nov. 7 against Potomac, 7:30 p.m.
Building a program is a tough process, but improvement is there. The Eagles’ need just ten points against Potomac to have their best offensive season in the program’s history.
