The Paul Monitor #3: Dr. Snow Day or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Day Off

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager
Here’s something you should know. I don’t work in an office. Sure, DigitalSports has an office — two in fact — but I work from home. Of course I leave my house to cover games and the like, but most of the time, I’m sitting at home, typing away at my keyboard. So what happens when Prince William cancels school and in turn cancels sporting events? Well, I sit at home. Everyone else I know is at work and I’m stuck with nothing to do.

I know, start playing the violin and all that. Yes, I should be ecstatic to get a day off work. Problem is, I’m not off work. I just have absolutely nothing to do. It’s a weird dichotomy. Let me explain: Here’s me talking to my brain (Note: My brain talks like HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey — two Kubrick jokes so far, for those keeping track at home).

Paul: Whelp, nothing to do here. Guess I’m going to go watch some television.
Brain: I wouldn’t do that Paul. You’re supposed to be working.
Paul: There’s nothing to do! I’ve updated all the basketball scores. Mapped out my district tournament schedule. There’s no breaking news. I can’t do any planning for a game, cause there aren’t any.
Brain: Well you certainly can’t slack off. What do those fine people at DigitalSports pay you for?
Paul: Fine, I’m just gonna sit here in front of the computer.
Brain: You better not open up Solitaire, Paul.
Paul: What about Mindsweeper?
Brain: Not even Mindsweeper.
Paul: Noooooooooooo

At this point I pretty much just ball up in a corner and wait for someone to come home and take care of my fractured psyche.

I’m exaggerating of course. I do get a bit of work done — read the Potomac News and Washington Post for any stories I missed, brainstorm some feature ideas, make a few calls, update the DigitalSports Facebook Page (Plug!). I also allow myself some time to slack off — watch television, play XBox, etc.

But it still nags at the conscience to know that I should be doing something constructive and really can’t. It’s enough to drive a DigitalSports employee slightly insane. Don’t believe me? Look at Ryan Mink’s Montgomery County blog. He did a list of the top reality shows on televison! (Of course, everybody knows the best reality show is Celebrity Rehab: Sober House.) The Northern Region’s Phil Murphy discusses his desire to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. And me? Well I’m posting discussions that I have with myself.

Okay, let’s get back on track for a second. Last week, I posted a Top 5 for boys basketball. It felt good to get my opinion out there, so I’m gonna do it again. Standings can be found here for boys and here for girls.

Boys Basketball
1. Potomac (11-8, 2-2)
2. C.D. Hylton (12-3, 3-1)
3. Woodbridge (10-5, 3-1)
4. Gar-Field (9-7, 2-2)
5. Battlefield (10-4, 7-1)

Girls Basketball
1. Forest Park (13-3, 4-0)
2. Stonewall Jackson (14-2, 9-0)
3. Osbourn Park (13-2, 7-1)
4. Woodbridge (8-6, 2-2)
5. Potomac (4-9, 3-1)

I’m not going to do much explaining for these and I’m sure they’ll change dramatically tonight. On the boy’s side, Potomac is now the top dog because they beat Hylton. Battlefield falls a bit because of its loss to Fauquier. On the girl’s side, the top three are easy. They’re three of the better teams in the region. I also like Woodbridge and the Kendall Hayes-run Panthers.

I guess that’s it for now. I promise that I’ll stay on topic next week, as there will be a ton to talk about with district tournaments starting. I’ll be at Stonewall Jackson High School tonight for the Raiders’ doubleheader with Osbourn Park. Come say hello. Even if the game gets canceled for some reason, I’m leaving the house. I’ll just get up and walk somewhere. You’ll probably find me later — frozen in the woods like Jack Nicholson from the Shining… three!

Enough about me. What do you think?

Raiders Remain Undefeated in Cedar Run

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager
pfrommelt@digitalsports.com

In a meeting after the Stonewall Jackson girl basketball team’s 11-point win over Osbourn Park — a game in which the Raiders increased their district lead to two games — head coach Nsonji White informed his girls that they would have practice on Saturday morning at 6 a.m.

“We had a lull in the third quarter and we can’t do that as a championship team,” said White after telling his team. “These girls talk about all the time about getting to Richmond and if
they want to get to Richmond, they have to play good defense and we
didn’t play good defense totally tonight.”

After holding the Yellow Jackets to 18 points in the first half, White was disappointed with Osbourn Park’s 13-point third quarter.

Senior Kyani White sighed when talking about her early-morning plans, but was quick to point out the importance of the practice.

“Of course it’s going to help. Defense wins games. Defense is our
emphasis and that’s what we are going to practice all the time,” she said. “If we
come out in a game and we don’t do what were are supposed to do on
defense, we will be in the gym at 6 o’clock in the morning.”

It was Kyani that got the game going in the right direction for the Raiders. Within the game’s first minute, she hit two three-pointers, helping the Raiders jump out to a 7-0 lead. Stonewall scored 21 points in that first quarter, taking a 12-point lead. White finished with a game-high 25 points.

“We talk about coming out strong. We came out like gangbusters,” said coach White. “Jumping on them right there, they had to play from behind and they aren’t a play from behind team.”

To their credit, the Yellow Jackets were able to put up a fight in the second half. Led by Rachel Gordon and Destiny Shearin, who combined for 28 points, Osbourn Park outscored Stonewall in the third quarter and pulled within six points with 3:28 left to play.

White called a timeout calm his girls down.

“I am a very animated coach. I’m very lively and my team pretty much
mimics me. In those times, we call a timeout to slow them up,” he said. “I called a couple of timeouts and what we talked about was letting the
defense come to us because we were up and we were playing like we were
down, that’s the rivalry. We pressed this game because they really
wanted to put it on them. We weren’t attacking and we weren’t playing smart. All we have to do right now is let them come to us.”

The Raiders held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the final three minutes and added five more points to earn a comfortable 52-41 win. The win gives the Raiders a bit more distance between themselves and the rest of the Cedar Run District with only a handful more regular season games to play.

“It’s real easy sometimes to get to the top. We had a plan. We gave up our summers. These girls worked extremely hard. They are in the weight room, they’re on the track,” said White. “The hardest part of any championship team is staying on top and I think that they are doing a mighty good job at that.”

Staying on top sometimes requires waking up early on a Saturday morning.

Paige’s Free Throws Lift Yellow Jackets

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager
pfrommelt@digitalsports.com

Osbourn Park’s Dominic Paige called his free throw shooting last season “terrible”. Since then, he has been working with his coaches to develop a better form at the charity stripe. He has also been working on his ability to zone everything else out while on the line — not let the opposing players and fans get into his head. Paige went 3-for-4 from the foul line and scored nine points during Friday night’s game against Stonewall Jackson. None, however, were bigger than his final two shots.

Paige stepped to the free throw line with 3.7 seconds left in a 56-56 game. All that hard work over the summer helped him zone out the Raider fans who doing their best to take away the senior guard’s focus. He took a deep breath and nailed both shots, giving the Yellow Jackets an impressive 58-56 district win on the road. Both of his shots swished through the net, barely even hitting rim.

“It just boiled down to the last second shot,” said Osbourn Park head coach Bobby Lake. “He took the best shot at the end.”

Lake said that he was proud of Paige for hitting both shots, but he was equally proud of how Paige got to the line. The Raiders and Yellow Jackets were deadlocked at 56-56 for almost two minutes. Mistakes, fouls and turnovers plagued both teams in the final minutes. When the Yellow Jackets’ took possession in the final seconds, Lake called a timeout to get his team organized. Lake drew up the Yellow Jackets’ final play and Paige’s job was to set a screen and then roll towards the net. Osbourn Park’s shot was off the mark, but Paige was right in position to get the rebound. The resulting struggle for the ball ended with the Raiders fouling Paige.

“I wasn’t just proud that he took those two shot, I was proud that he
got the rebound,” said Lake. “He set the screen and rolled and he was there. He had inside position. That’s what happened. We got lucky.”

The Yellow Jackets’ Andrew Brookins led the way with a game-high 24 points, followed by Paige’s nine points and six from Jack Adamson. The Raiders were led by Jordan Baird and Jamal Fofana, each with 17 points. Morgan Winbush added 13 for Stonewall.

“We are going to enjoy it tonight and get to work tomorrow,” said Lake after the game. “That’s how I always approach it, [because] anybody can win in this district, it’s up for grabs.”

The Paul Monitor #2.5: Taking Over the Internet

The Paul Monitor #2.5: Taking Over the Internet

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager

Hey guys, just popping in for a quick minute to discuss some new ways to get content from DigitalSports. This company prides itself on being on the cutting edge when it comes to distributing content — such as photos and videos — to the public. We’ve got a whole host of fine folks working at DigitalSports with ridiculously huge brains that keep us a step ahead of everyone else in the industry.

Being the team player that I am, I wanted to use my very limited skills to help out. I don’t know much, but I know how to use Facebook.

Thus, Prince Wiliam’s DigitalSports Facebok Group was born. Here’s a few things that you will be able to find on the group page.

Recent News: Find out where I’ll be every night. Facebook will be the only place where you’ll be able to find this information.

The Wall: I’ll be posting up to date info on whats going on at DigitalSports.com. Also, you will be able to post your own comments relating to the happenings in Prince William high school sports.

Photos: After every game, I’ll post at least five photos to the groups wall. From there you can tag yourself and friends. Of course, all photos taken from the event will be available at DigitalSports. I’ll post a gallery link with the photos. You can also post your own photos to the page.

Videos: Again, I’ll post a few choice videos on the group. Tag them. Comment on them. Show your friends. Gallery links will take you directly to all the videos on DigitalSports. Post your own videos on the page to share with friends.

But I didn’t want to stop there. No sir, not with my exemplary work ethic.

I also created a Prince William DigitalSports User Account.

You can add this account as a friend and get even more information about DigitalSports. On the page, you’ll find:

Status Updates: See where I’ll be from the comfort of Facebook’s home page using the live feed. Know exactly when stories and videos will be posted to DigitalSports. Also find out scoring updates for games in progress — uploaded from my trusty cell phone.

Messages: Send me suggestions for game coverage, stories ideas, etc. Want me to know about a big game coming up that I should be at? Shoot me a message.

Notes: Using the magic of RSS Feeds (I don’t know what that means either) you’ll be able to see the moment something is added to DigitalSports.com.

Not on Facebook, no problem. I’ve got you covered.

Prince William DigitalSports is also on Twitter. Easy to use, easy to follow.

I’ll be posting story links, score updates and other info right to Twitter. Just like Facebook’s status updates, you’ll get all you need about DigitalSports right on Twitter.

All of these services are free and don’t put anymore cash in my pocket. What they do, however, is further expand DigitalSports’ goal of creating a online community for high school athletes and fans. You know how principals and coaches have “open door” policies? This is my version of an “open internet” policy. My internet is always open.

Okay, that sounds slightly creepy — but you know what I’m saying.

This goes without saying: These services are here to complement the top dog — the flagship site — DigitalSports.com.

Enough about me. What do you think?

Loudoun Valley: Coach Troy Mezzatesta reports: ” We ended up 7-2 … We beat McLean, Yorktown, Woodbridge, Freedom, Heritage, Manassas Park, and Broad Run. The Heritage match was 35-34. A  good match. Garrett Swankowski was our team MVP for the tournament … We had a ton of guys hurt and even more hurt after the long weekend duals … Just hoping to get healthy for the Districts.

Freedom: Eagle coach Patrick McNanley reports: “The Freedom wrestling team went 6-3 on Friday and Saturday at the Loudoun Valley Duals.  Charles Constantino, Steven Marquina, Marshall Haas, and Joseph Sheptock all had very strong showings at the Valley duals. Charles Constantino went 8-1 while moving between 171 and 189 throughout the weekend, his only lost was to Bolan of Valley 3-1.  Charles improved to 31-7 on the year.
Steven Marquina went 7-1 on the weekend and defeated Jeremy Ryan of Westfield, who is currently ranked 5th in AAA and 1st in the Northern Region.  His only loss came to Dakota Thompson of North Stafford 10-9 who is currently ranked 6th in AAA and is undefeated on the season.  Steven is now 35-5 on the year and already has 56 wins in his first two years of wrestling! Marshall Haas improved to 27-12 this weekend while moving between 189 and 215.  Marshall went 7-2 on the weekend and has won 16 of his last 18 matches. Joseph Sheptock went 7-2 on the weekend as well losing to Nick Grinups of Westfield by decision and Matt Smith of Woodbridge wrestling up at 152 to get a tougher match.  Joseph is now 37-6 on the season with 22 pins. We are now 18-7 overall and 4-2 in the district … also individually we have 12 out of 14 wrestlers with winning records!  Our 2 freshmen are the only two wrestlers that don’t have winning records and that could change this week.
Do you have a report from this duals tournament for your school? Send it to Dan Sousa (dsousa@digitalsports.com).

The Paul Monitor #2: Lovin’ the Cardinal

The Paul Monitor #2: Lovin’ the Cardinal

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager
First things first — no, this blog will not be about the Arizona Cardinals. Great story in the NFL, but I’m here to talk about the Cardinal District. More specifically, boys basketball in the Cardinal District.
Okay, gimme a second to set this up. I love my job. I get to watch sports for a living. Problem is, my friends don’t really understand my passion for high school sports. They have boring jobs that force them to wake up early and fight traffic on the way home. Their escape is sports. My life is sports. When they want to talk about Tim Tebow — I wanna talk about Thomas Keith. They want to talk about Clinton Portis. I want to tell them what De’Antwan Williams did last Friday. My girlfriend wants to talk about American Idol. I wanna talk about Danni Jackson. My dogs want to talk about that squirrel in the backyard. I want to — well that squirrel is kinda interesting.
That’s why I’m learning to love this blog. Because, right now, my friends want to talk about the Big East or ACC. I want to talk about the Cardinal District — and if your reading this blog, you probably want to talk about it as well.
Looking at the standings right now (which you can find here, by the way), C.D. Hylton holds a one-game lead over Woodbridge with a perfect 3-0 record. Everybody else is two games back with a 1-2 record in district play. That doesn’t tell the whole story though, because on any night, any team could win.
Look at what has already happened three games into the district schedule — pay attention, I’m gonna quiz you afterwards.
Woodbridge has beaten Freedom and Gar-Field, but lost to C.D. Hylton.
Gar-Field has lost to Hylton and Woodbridge, but beat Potomac
Potomac — they beat Freedom but lost to Forest Park and Gar-Field.
Forest Park, they beat Potomac but lost to Freedom and Hylton.
Freedom beat Forest Park and lost to Woodbridge and Potomac.
C.D. Hylton? They’ve beaten Gar-Field, Woodbridge (by 2) and Forest Park.
Right now it looks like Hylton is the favorite, but what’s gonna happen the next time they play Woodbridge? Can they beat Keith Honore and the Potomac Panthers, who are starting to gel as a team? Do you think Kwasi Amponsah and Jeremiah Johnson from Gar-Field are gonna let the Bulldogs beat them twice?
These are the questions that I want answered. These are the questions that will be answered over the next month. I can’t wait.
As you may have noticed, unlike the football season, I have shied away from posting weekly rankings. This was mostly because I didn’t know squat about the teams that I was covering for a good month into the season. After that, it felt like I would be late to the party.
What’s that? You say you are dying for my opinion? Okay, fine, if you insist. Here’s my top five in Prince William boys basketball right now:
1. C.D. Hylton (11-2 overall, 3-0 Cardinal)
2. Woodbridge (9-5 overall, 2-1 Cardinal)
3. Battlefield (10-3 overall, 7-0 Cedar Run)
4. Gar-Field (8-7 overall, 1-2 Cardinal)
5. Potomac (10-7 overall, 1-2 Cardinal)
I think C.D. Hylton is the most complete team right now. I believe that Keith Mitchell and Darrell Patterson represent the best one-two punch in Prince William. Woodbridge has the dominant Raphiael Putney and sharpshooter David Thomas. Battlefield is going to win the Cedar Run District by a large margin. Gar-Field has the most exciting player in the district in Amponsah. Potomac is still trying to get into a grove in what should have been a rebuilding year. They get better by the day.
All that and I haven’t even mentioned the girls side, which has two of the best teams in the state in Forest Park and Stonewall Jackson — not to mention how exciting the young Yellow Jackets are — and how about legendary coach Kendall Hayes coming back to coach the Potomac girls?
I’m rambling now, which means it’s time to bring this blog to a close.
I’m interested though: Which team tops your list midway through the season? Who is the best player in the district in your eyes? Email me at pfrommelt@digitalsports.com. If you keep it friendly, I’ll post your email next Friday.
Enough about me. What do you think?

The Paul Monitor #1: Hello World

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager

Okay, so every DigitalSports Content Manager now has a blog in which to talk about various topics which fall outside the regular paint-by-numbers sports event coverage and breaking news. Of course, every blog had to have a wacky name. The Northern Region’s Phil Murphy took “Murphy’s Law“. Montgomery County’s Rink Mink got “For Ryan Out Loud“. For Southern Maryland, Andy States took “Altered States”.
You can see what I’m dealing with here. How do you rhyme Frommelt? At first I wanted “Wailing Paul”. A play off of the Wailing Wall.
From Wikipedia: The Western Wall, sometimes referred to as the Wailing Wall or simply Kotel, and as al-Buraq Wall by Muslims is an important Jewish religious site located in the Old City of Jerusalem which is also of significance to Islam. Just over half the wall, including its 17 courses located below street level, dates from the end of the Second Temple period, being constructed around 19 BCE by Herod the Great. The remaining layers were added from the 7th century onwards.

Yeah, that won’t work.
What about “Frommelt’s Forum”? To bland.
“Prince William Sport Blog”? See answer above.
Is “Deadspin” taken? Yes.
So in the end, I grabbed, “Paul Monitor”. You know, like a Hall Monitor. Get it? Let’s move on.
Ten Things You Need to Know About Paul Frommelt:
1. I graduated from Fairfax High School in 2001. I went to Christopher Newport University and majored in English with a concentration in Journalism in Film Studies.
2. I have played an organized version of nearly every sport, but was pretty mediocre in most. I was a three-sport athlete at Fairfax — football in the fall, wrestling in the winter, track and field in the spring. I was a two-year varsity starter for the football team, playing right guard. I was First-Team All-District at guard during my senior year – but at 190 pounds, received only a little bit of Division III interest and decided to hang up the pads. (That’s me on the left during my last game with the super-awesome mohawk.) During my sophomore year at CNU, I roomed with a defensive tackle and tight end for the football team. They were each nearly 100 pounds heavier than me. I made the right choice.
3. I was a very, very, very, bad wrestler. My crowing achievement was posting an above-.500 record on JV during my junior year.
4. I also tried out for the lacrosse team during my junior year. I had never picked up a stick before, I just wanted a reason to hit people. Needless to say, I didn’t make the team. I have tremendous respect for lacrosse players because, man, that sport is hard.
5. I covered Fairfax County and Loudoun County for the Connection Newspapers from May 2006 to August 2008. I won seven Virginia Press Association Awards during that time. As you can tell, I’m kind of a big deal.
6. I was born in San Jose, California, moved to Colorado, then to Michigan, then back to California before settling in Fairfax County in the fourth grade. Never have I lived in Baltimore, much less Maryland. I root for the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens — it’s a long story. (Side Note: That’s me in with the Oriole Bird at Camden Yards. It was probably one of the highlights of my life). (Side Note #2: Don’t expect any updates on Sunday as I will be sitting at my parent’s house my 13-year-old brother — the only other Ravens fan I know — watching the Ravens beat on the Steelers. I can’t be out in public during that time because I know how many Pittsburgh fans roam around Northern Virginia).
7. I have two dogs. The dog that you saw in the first photo was Krypto (Superman’s dog, the Dog of Steel — duh). I also have an 85-pound monster named Allie. Why do you need to know that? Well next time I interview you, check for dog hair covering my body. It will be there.
8. I believe strongly that cheerleading is a sport. I get some flak from my colleagues for this. I have two sisters that were cheerleaders. Being the hunky football player that I was in high school, I have also dated a few. I know the kind of work that cheerleaders put in. I know the kind of injuries that cheerleaders get. Last fall, during the district competitions, I saw a cheerleader fall over six feet, clearly injure her shoulder and continue the rest of the routine with only one arm, fighting back tears. Now that’s tough. I’d like to see an offensive lineman do backflips the length of a basketball court on two bum ankles and a bad knee.
9. Here is a dirty little secret about journalists — or at least me as a journalist: I rely heavily on coaches, players, athletic directors, parents pointing me in the right direction for stories. Got a story that you want me to write? Shoot me an email. Got a tip? Tell me.
10. I started a Facebook Group. Please join. Upload photos. Post on the wall. See where I’ll be each night. The amount of people that join is directly related to my self esteem, so please help me out. I’ll also be closely monitoring (Get it?) the page, so lets keep it friendly.
But enough about me, let’s talk about you.
Paul Monitor will be posted every Friday afternoon. Want Paul to write about something? Email him at pfrommelt@digitalsports.com.
