Jessica Lowman’s first goal as a field hockey player wasn’t necessarily a power shot that dented the back of the cage. Lowman even admitted that she was surprised it found its way into the goal. But there is no denying what the first-year player’s goal meant for Osbourn Park.

“This is our turning point here,” said Osbourn Park head coach Kate Thomas. “I really felt that after that first goal… there was this confidence – something new on the field.”

Lowman’s goal ended up being the Yellow Jacket’s game-winner in their 2-0 victory over Forest Park and secured Osbourn Park’s first victory on the young season.

“[I was suprised] mostly because it was not my strongest hit, but I was happy,” said Lowman after the game. “It feels really good.”

Lowman’s goal midway through the second half broke a scoreless struggle in which the Bruins looked to have the upper hand. Forest Park controlled the momentum throughout the first half, pressuring Osbourn Park goaltender Jackie Moore and the Yellow Jackets’ defense. Moore held her ground, however, deflecting anything that came her way, including a penalty shot midway through the first half.

“I was a little nervous, but I just took a deep breath and it was okay,” said Moore of the penalty shot save. “I got it.”

After a tough 1-0 loss to Fauquier on Monday night, Thomas called a team meeting on Wednesday night.

“We have been struggling in our first couple of games,” she said. “We put some things together.”

With that meeting still fresh in their mind, the Yellow Jackets came out in the second half on a mission. The momentum changed almost immediately.

“This is a team with a lot of heart,” said Thomas whose squad applied even more pressure to the reeling Bruins after Lowman’s goal broke the tie. “We weren’t letting up, we were going to go for as many as we could.”

If Lowman’s goal started a second chapter for the Yellow Jackets this season, Whitney Thomas’s goal gave it an exclamation point.

With time running down in the game, Thomas received a corner pass, manuevered past a Forest Park defender and rocketed the ball into the back of the cage.

The win improved the Yellow Jackets’ record to 1-2 on the season, with important district matches against Battlefield and Liberty next week.

2008 Boys Cross Country

The Osbourn Park High School cross country team was the top dog in Prince William running last Fall, with Tyler Simmons, Josiah Renton and Richard Arena each placing in the top 11 at the Northwest Region Cross Country Meet, helping the Yellow Jackets take the #4 spot in the team standings. Simmons and Renton may have moved on, but Arena, who was a top-50 AAA state runner last year, remains. Arena is joined by senior Richard Brezina and junior Alex Hoak — both state qualifiers last year.

The Battlefield Bobcats will look to challenge the Yellow Jackets this year, returning four key runners from last year’s squad. Junior Garrick Clemente leads the charge for the Bobcats, finishing 2007 with a #7 time at the Cedar Run District Cross Country Meet and a #20 time at the Northwest Region meet. Sophomore Kyle Beach, junior Darren Driscoll and senior Gary Martin also return for the Bobcats.

In the Cardinal District, Forest Park and C.D. Hylton field a combined seven of the top 15 returning runners in Prince William. Junior Sam Burris, at top-20 region finisher last year, leads the Bruins. Karabinus was the #4 runner in the state last year, recording a time of 18 minutes, 11.56 seconds at the Virginia State AAA Cross Country Meet. Karabinus was only six seconds behind #3 runner Octavia Rinehardt of Tallwood High School and only 15 seconds behind top finisher Kathleen Lautzenhe of Midlothian. Two more top-40 AAA state finishers return this season — senior Michelle Britto of Woodbridge and sophomore Debra Baner of Potomac — giving Prince William a nice mix of talent.

As for the team competition, Karabinus’s Yellow Jackets looked primed to take home the Cedar Run title. Junior Ashley Wybersky, senior Cristin Gonzales and sophomore Natalie Geleta all return for the Osbourn Park this year. All three joined Karabinus in the top 25 of the Northwest Region in 2007.

Forest Park 16, Loudoun Valley 0
Forest Park shuts down the Vikings, 16-0, to open up the season. The Bruins took advantage of three interceptions by their defensive backfield and three field goals by kicker Patrick Nuckols to jump out on the Vikings. Playing in a steady downpour throughout the night, mother nature kicked it up a notch in the fourth quarter – stymieing any comeback chances for Valley.

Woodbridge 13, Highland Springs 0
The Vikings get two more scores from De’Antwan “Rocket” Williams — bringing his season total to six, beating their highly-rated opponent from the Henrico County. Woodbridge now moves to 2-0 on the season.

C.D. Hylton 21, Stonewall Jackson 6
Playing without Tennessee-bound running back Damien Thigpen, who missed tonight’s game with an ankle injury that has shelved him for most of the preseason. Hylton running back Bill Nyantakyi scored twice for the Bulldogs.

Mountain View 34, Freedom-Woodbridge 6
Trailing 21-6 at halftime, the Eagles were unable to mount a comeback against Mountain View. Quarterback Keith Johnson connected with Tre Brinson for the Eagles only score.

Osbourn Park 26, Colonial Forge 7
Sophomore transfer Dominique Terrell was electric in his debut for the Yellow Jackets, scoring twice and helping Osbourn Park take down Colonial Forge for an opening-night victory.

North Stafford 16, Gar-Field 12
Gar-Field leads 7-0 early, but can’t pull out a victory in their home-opener. The Indians fall to 1-1 on the season. Running back Bryce Miller topped 100 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown for the Indians.

Thursday Night’s Games:

Brooke Point 24, Osbourn 7
Timmy Keith hauls in a 80-yard touchdown pass from Jerrell McFadden but the Eagles can’t stop Brooke Point’s rushing attack and fall to 0-1 on the season.

Potomac 14, Stafford 7
The Panthers’ rushing attack carried Potomac to their first victory of the season. Bouncing back after a devastating loss to Battlefied, Potomac rushed for over 200 yards on the ground, with quarterback DeAirius Thomas connection with Anthony Edwards for the Panthers’ first score and sealing their victory with a rushing touchdown.

Football: Prince William Power Rankings, Week 1

By Paul Frommelt

1. Woodbridge Vikings
Record (1-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 at Highland Springs
The Vikings have jumped out as clear favorites in the Cardinal District after blowing out Riverbend, 40-9. Star running back De’Antwan Williams, coming off of a season in which he ran for 2,247 yards and 27 touchdowns, exploded for over 230 yards and four touchdowns against the Bears. The Vikes, the defending AAA Div. 6 Northwest Region champs, are acting like they deserve to be at the top.

2. Battlefield Bobcats
Record (1-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 at Gar-Field
The Bobcats emphasized that last year wasn’t a fluke as the defending Cedar Run champs shutout Potomac, 41-0. Senior running back Adrian Ingram rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries and senior quarterback Bo Revell pass for 153 yards and a score.

3. Forest Park Bruins
Record (0-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 against Loudoun Valley
The Bruins’ dramatic upswing last season bodes well for Forest Park this year. Head coach Charlie Chandler improved by five wins in his second year at the helm. With players like Brandon Scott, Tunde Bakare and Miguel Marshall returning, expect the Bruins to take another step forward.

4. Gar-Field Indians
Record (1-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 against North Stafford
The Indians 20-14 win over Colonial Forge gave head coach Tom Gryder his first win as Gar-Field’s man on the sidelines. Senior running back Bryce Miller rushed for 184 yards and two scores, while the Indians’ defense stymied Colonial Forge’s running game.

5. Potomac Panthers
Record (0-1), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 6 at Stafford
The Panthers’ offense was shut down by Battlefield in their opening game. Hopefully for head coach Tony Lilly, that speaks more to the Bobcats’ defense than his Panthers’ offense.

6. C.D. Hylton Bulldogs
Record (0-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 against Stonewall Jackson
The Bulldogs finished with their first losing season in the program’s 15-year history. Don’t expect that to happen again if head coach Lou Sorrentino has anything to say about it.

7. Osbourn Eagles
Record (0-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 at Brooke Point
The Eagles started out their 2007 campaign in disastrous fashion but pulled it together in the final three games. The Eagles will look to maintain that momentum at Brook Point on Friday night in their first game of the year.

8. Stonewall Jackson Raiders
Record (0-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 at C.D. Hylton
The injury bug hit Stonewall Jackson hard last year. If they can stay healthy, expect a much better year from the Raiders.

9. Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets
Record (0-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 against Colonial Forge
The Yellow Jackets had a difficult time scoring last year – averaging 16 point-per-game. Head coach Brian Beaty has a talented squad this year, hoping to put more points on the board.

10. Freedom Eagles
Record (0-0), Last Week (NA)
Next Game: Sept. 5 against Mountain View
Head coach John Robinette has his squad getting better every day. How quickly they will be able to compete in the Cardinal District is the question.

2007 Record: 3-7 overall, 3-4 district
Returning Starters: 6 offense/6 defense
Key Losses: QB Aaron Lee; OL Alex Schwab.
Top Returners: LB Mike Noblit, Sr., 6-1, 186; CB Devon Edwards, Sr., 5-10, 173; DB Zach Bargeron, Sr., 6-1, 181; OL Hunter Ward, Sr., 6-3, 255; OL James Schambach, Sr., 6-1, 262; OL Elliot Lloyd, Jr., 6-0, 181; OL David McNeill, Sr., 6-2, 225; WR Mason Baxter, Sr., 5-10, 175; RB Shawn Khanamuenwai, Sr., 5-7, 175.
Fresh Faces: QB Dominique Terrell, Soph. 5-10, 155; WR Chris Mason, Soph. 5-9, 155.
Game to Watch: Week 11, Nov. 12 against Osbourn
The last time the Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets defeated Osbourn was their first meeting in 2004. Since then, the Eagles have beaten the Yellow Jackets four consecutive times. Beating their rivals from two miles down the road in their final regular-season game of the year on Nov. 12 would be a great momentum boost heading into the playoffs — or a great way to cap a season.

Yellow Jackets Looking to Fix Mistakes of the Past

By Paul Frommelt
Content Editor, DigitalSports — Prince William County

10th in a series of 10.

When asked for the main reasons that the Yellow Jacket’s finished with a subpar 3-7 record on the season last year, Osbourn Park head coach Brian Beaty had two quick answers.

“Special teams were terrible and when we got into the red zone, we didn’t know how to punch it in,” he said.

Not surprisingly, Osbourn Park’s red zone offense and special teams have been a big focus of Beaty’s during the Yellow Jackets’ preseason practices this year. As for if the problems have been fixed, Beaty is more hesitant to answer.

“We have worked on the special teams. We have worked on red zone situations,” he said. “Just like every team in the country, they all work on things, but until that first game, you don’t know if you accomplished it. We will see. They have done a good job but the real show hasn’t started.”

Beaty is looking to recapture the Yellow Jacket’s former glory that saw his squad compile a 30-14 record from 2002 to 2005, making it to the Northwest Region Div. 6 finals in 2002 and 2003. Helping him reach that goal will be returning senior running back Shawn Khanamuenwai, who rushed for 930 yards last year and an offensive line that returns four starters, including seniors Zach Bargeron, Hunter Ward and James Schambach.

Newcomer Dominique Terrell, a transferred from Manassas Park where he totaled 1,053 yards through the air and on the ground with nine touchdowns as a freshman, will also look to give the Yellow Jackets’ some more offensive pop.

“We’ve showed a little bit more speed and quickness this year,” said Beaty.

Beaty also believes that the Yellow Jackets’ 3-7 record is a bit misleading, considering that he believes that his squad was in every game that they played but two – a 41-17 loss to Potomac and a 34-14 loss to Osbourn. Every other game, the Yellow Jackets were within two possessions of tying the game.

“Every other game, we were right there,” he said.
