The Paul Monitor #7: Spring Tourney Questions

The Paul Monitor #7: Spring Tourney Questions

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Editor
Okay, two things to get out of the way before we get started. First — yes, I know that it’s been way too long since I’ve updated this supposed “weekly” blog. You know how many rabid fans packed my email inbox with letter begging for the return of the Paul Monitor? Zero. So here’s the deal, I’m going to attempt to get this thing out at least four more times before the school year ends and you are going to attempt to care. Kapeesh? Good.
Second — I’ve started two more weekly features on the website. The first is called “DigtalSports Poll” and its — wait for it — a weekly poll where I get to ask questions and you, the reader, gets to answer. The first poll asks which AAA high school in Prince William is having the best spring season. Right now Osbourn Park has a one-vote edge over Battlefield. So far we have 41 total votes. Let’s try and get it at least to 100 so I can feel loved. The next feature its called “Hot Links“, which takes a look at some of the best stories out of Prince William County that aren’t written by yours truly. I’m just like you — I consume everything relating to Prince William prep sports, from the Potomac News to the Washington Post. Every week I’m gonna give you my ten favorite stories.
Alright, enough ******* of the product — let’s get down to business. I’m about to experience my first spring postseason in Prince William County and I have a few questions that I would like answered before all is said and done.
1). Will I Ever See Osbourn Park and Osbourn Baseball Play Each Other?
Tuesday marked what seems like the 1,189th time that I had the Eagles and Yellow Jackets on my schedule only to see the game get postponed. It’s my own fault, I suppose, because I had a chance to check out their first meeting last week, but chose another game, knowing that I could always watch their second meeting. Of course Mother Nature hates me. I’m planning on going to the game on Thursday so let’s all hope for at least two hours of sunshine.
2). Who’s Gonna Beat Loudoun Valley in Lacrosse?
No offense to Dan Sousa over in Loudoun County, but Cedar Run titles need to stay in Prince William. I’ve got nothing against the Vikings — or Culpeper, Fauquier and Liberty for that matter — but let’s pull the upset here.
3. Can Battlefield Softball Go All the Way?
Much has been made of the Bobcats regional and national rankings. We’ve got them at No. 1 in the D.C. Metro Area and the USA Today/NFCA National poll has them at No. 11. The Bobcats will be the first to tell you that none of that matter unless they bring home some hardware — specifically a state title.
4). If Not the Bobcats, Then Who?
I don’t want to brag, but I’m kind of a lucky charm. Last Sunday marked my third year covering high school sports in Northern Virginia and to-date, I’ve seen a ton of titles, especially in the spring. Who’s gonna benefit from my awesomeness this year. Osbourn Park and Battlefield boys soccer are currently No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in our rankings. Woodbridge and Gar-Field aren’t too shabby either. OP’s baseball team could get it done. Same with Potomac, Woodbridge or Osbourn. What about AAA state runners-up Battlefield girls soccer? Or the Vikings girls soccer? There’s no lack of talent in Prince William this year.
5). Will I Finally Get Over My Fear of Tennis and Crew?
I’m gonna just put it out there, I have no idea how to cover these sports. I know that the site is really lacking in tennis and crew coverage and I’m looking to remedy that this week. Honestly, tennis is kinda overwhelming. There’s like 12 matches going on at the same time and nobody has numbers on their back and I don’t know why they say “love” instead of “zero”. I promise to at the very least attend some district finals. As for crew, I’ve pretty much missed the boat (pun!) this season. I will, however, be out at the VASRA State Championship Regatta on Saturday and have been promised the opportunity to film from a pontoon boat during some of the races. So either I get great footage and become a hero or I fall in the water and am embarrassed. Either way, I think it’s a win-win.
6). Finally, Is Liking Star Trek Cool?
I’ve never been one for Kirk and Spock — I’ve always sided with Luke Skywalker in the great nerd battle between Star Wars and Star Trek — but it seems like critics are really digging the new movie. I don’t know what to think, because Trek fans usually look like this, but the flick seems pretty cool. I might have to give it a shot. Gotta do something until Terminator comes out. As we all know, thinking robots are awesome will never go out of style.
Enough about me. What do you think?
“The Paul Monitor” will be updated weekly. Think Paul is nuts? Want your opinion heard? Email Paul at pfrommelt@digitalsports.com. Reader emails will be posted the following week.

D.C. Beltway Area: Boys’ Soccer Top 10

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of May 3

1. Osbourn Park (9-0-1) — LW: 1
The
Yellow
Jackets continued their top form with a pair of impressive wins last week: 2-1 over a quality Liberty side and 4-0 over Culpeper. Osbourn Park has outscored its opponents 30-3 this season, the fewest goals
allowed among any team in the DigitalSports coverage
area. It faces Loudoun Valley (0-7-4), Fauquier (2-5-4) and Osbourn (7-3-1) in the next six days.
2. Battlefield (8-0-2) — LW: 3
The
Bobcats
remain one of two unbeaten teams in Northern Virginia after a 1-0 win over Liberty and a 2-2 draw with Fauquier. Battlefield travels to Osbourn (7-3-1) on Thursday and Loudoun Valley (0-7-4) on Friday before a much-ancipated season finale with No. 1 Osbourn Park on May 12.
3. Westfield (12-1-0) — LW: 4
The
Bulldogs won a trio of out-of-district games last week, beating Yorktown, Stuart and T.C. Williams by a combined 10-2. Westfield has scored a D.C.-area-best 53 goals in its 13 games and closes out the season. Its regular season is complete and won the Concorde District regular-season title to earn a first-round bye. .
4. Robinson (9-1-2) — LW: 2
The
Rams have posted some shaky results lately. Although Robinson is 3-0-1 in its last four matches, all three wins came by one goal and just one of the four games was against a team with a winning record. It drew with Oakton, 0-0, and beat Fairfax, 1-0, last week. The Rams face No. 8 Stone Bridge on Friday. They host Fairfax (2-10-0) in the first round of the Concorde District Tournament.
5. McLean (8-2-1) — LW: 7
The
Highlanders’
two
losses are to No. 3 Westfield, 5-2 on March 23, and
No. 10 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean handily beat Chantilly, 5-2, in its only match last week. The Highlanders won the regular-season Liberty District title and will host Marshall (1-10-1) in the first round of the district tournament on Monday.
6. Woodbridge (7-2-3) — LW: 6

The Vikings lost to Gar-Field, 1-0, on Tuesday, beat Forest Park, 2-0, on Wednesday and drew, 2-2,
with the Indians (5-1-2) on Saturday. But Woodbridge led 2-0 at
halftime in the last match. It travels to C.D. Hylton on Friday and
Freedom-Woodbridge on Monday. The Vikings
have allowed five goals in the last seven games (4-1-2).
7. South County (9-1-1) — LW: 8
The Stallions moved up two spots, but were just three minutes from beating Lake Braddock (6-1-4) last week before late goal earned the Bruins a 1-1 draw. South County is tied atop the Patriot District with Lake Braddock and only has a match with South Lakes (4-5-1) remaining in its regular season.
8. Stone Bridge (8-1-1) — LW: 9
The
Bulldogs have the third-best scoring defense in the Northern Region (Westfield and South County) and have a five-match unbeaten streak. Stone Bridge faces Marshall, South Lakes and No. 4 Robinson in the coming week.
9. Lake Braddock (6-1-4) — LW: N/A
The Bruins had a streak of draws early in the season, including a 2-2 tie with Robinson, and have found their form since a 3-1 home loss to West Springfield. Lake Braddock is tied with South County for first place in the Patriot District, with whom they played to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday.
10. Wakefield (9-1-2) — LW: 5

The Warriors opened eyes around the Northern Region with their 5-1
dismantling over the previously unbeaten — and previously fifth-ranked
— Eagles on on April 24, but have struggled since. Wakefield fell at Washington-Lee, 3-2, on Tuesday and drew, 0-0, with West Potomac on Wednesday. It closes the season against Herndon (6-4-1) on Thursday and Hayfield (4-7-1) on Saturday.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Edison (7-2-1) — LW: 10
Gar-Field (5-1-2)
Herndon (6-4-1)
Langley (6-2-2)
Osbourn (7-3-1)

**Rankings include teams from Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties

Yellow Jackets Outlast Bobcats in Cedar Run Showdown

Click on the “Photos” and “Videos”
links above for pictures and video highlights.

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Editor

With his team trailing by two goals to Battlefield at halftime, Osbourn Park head coach Rodney Cornell knew what to say. Haunted by second-half collapses and losses by a razor-thin margin all season, the Yellow Jackets’ coach poised a question to his team.

“Aren’t you sick of that,” senior midfielder Mike Noblit remembers his coach saying. “Aren’t you tired of getting pushed around and losing games that you’ve worked for?”

The reigning Cedar Run District champs, Osbourn Park has lost four games by four goals or less; two by just one goal, including a 7-6 loss to Osbourn on April 23. Add a 16-goal defeat at the hands of St. Albans and the Yellow Jackets entered the game with an uncharacteristic 4-5 record.

“We have a team that has gone through a lot this year,” said Cornell. “The past couple of years, we’ve had a pretty good run. This year has
been difficult for us. We’ve been playing a very difficult schedule and
we have had an issue with letting games slip from us in the fourth
quarter.”

Cornell knew exactly what he was doing during halftime.

“That struck a nerve,” said Noblit of his coach’s speech. “All year, we have been in that same situation, where we’ve been
fighting really hard and teams were pulling away from us in the end.”

Noblit and the Yellow Jackets’ made sure that didn’t happen on Thursday night, outscoring the Bobcats 7-3 over the final 24 minutes and picking up a crucial district victory over Battlefield, 10-8. Noblit led the way with three goals and two assists, while teammate Elliott Lloyd added three goals and an assist in the win.

After the game, Cornell declared the victory a turning point for the Yellow Jackets.

“This was the biggest game of the season for us. This is the game that is bringing us back together. This is a huge motivator,” he said. “We’ve said that if we keep on working hard and stay focused, that good things are about to happen.”

Osbourn Park started the game on the right foot, kicking off the scoring two minutes in on a goal by Lloyd. Noblit got his first goal midway through the first quarter and the Bobcats countered with goals from Andrew Felt and Cory Shumaker to make the score 2-2 through one quarter. The Bobcats took their first lead of the game with 9:27 left in the second on a Britt Hoover goal from Matt Mullins. Noblit evened the score 15 seconds later, grabbing a ground ball off the faceoff, marching down the field and slinging the ball right over the head of Battlefield goalkeeper Connor Mullins.

“Mike Noblit is probably one of the best players that we’ve ever had,” said Cornell. “Sometimes, players get hot and we knew that Mike was playing a
great game. We decided to let him take over the game and he stepped up
for us huge.”

The Bobcats responded with two unanswered goals to end the 1st half, giving Battlefield a 5-3 advantage — and prompting Cornell’s halftime speech. It took Osbourn Park just over nine minutes in the third quarter to surpass their scoring total from the entire first half. Three more goals in the fourth sealed the deal.

“We really came together as a team. The sidelines were just lit up. It was just an electric feeling,” said Noblit.

The victory evens up the Yellow Jackets’ overall record to 5-5 with a 4-1 record in the district. Osbourn Park will look to surpass the .500 mark for the first time since April 17 when they match up with Cardinal District heavyweight Forest Park on Friday night.

The loss drops the Bobcats to 4-2 in district play, with a game against Liberty on May 6 their last regular-season game before the district playoffs.

“It’s a setback. We take one step back and now we have to get ready for Liberty,” said Battlefield head coach Kevin Marsh. “When we hit the district playoffs, we are going to be fired up and ready to go. Whoever comes before us.”
