No. 10 — Dominion Takes Dulles
Loudoun County, Virginia — Titan senior DeAndre Albritton fires a half-court heave — .01 seconds too late — as Dominion (15-5, 11-1) won its first-ever Dulles District basketball title, beating Potomac Falls, 66-55.

No. 9 — Chen Twins Own Podium
Montgomery County, Maryland — Churchill girls swimming trailed powerhouse Walter Johnson all meet until Cathy and Karen Chen placed first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke, respectively, giving the Bulldogs their first-ever Division 1 Montgomery County swim title.

No. 8 — Chasing History
Montgomery County, Maryland — Churchill senior Chase Hicks slips backdoor for a one-handed jam on the night he was honored for being the Bulldogs’ first-ever 1,000-point scorer. Hicks finished with a game-high 24 points in Churchill’s 64-42 win over Gaithersburg.

No. 7 — Woodbridge and Hylton Host Block Party
Prince William County, Virginia — Woodbridge’s Raphiael Putney (2) and Deonte’ Hallums join C.D. Hylton’s Carlton Johnson to break out the grill, hot dogs and music and throw a block party to remember on Tuesday.

Johnson   Hallums    Putney 1    Putney 2

No. 6 — Raider in the Water
S.M.A.C., Maryland — Leonardtown senior Brittany Culpepper put an exclamation point on her weekend at the S.M.A.C. swimming championships on Saturday. She broke her own meet records in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.94) and 200-yard IM (2:17.57) in leading the Raiders to the conference title.

No. 5 — Riddle Me That, Who’s Afraid of the Mat?
Prince William County, Virginia — Woodbridge 112-lb wrestler Isaac Riddle gets a third-round pin to take the Cardinal District championship on Saturday. Riddle was one of seven individual champions for Forest Park, who ran away with the team title. Then, Riddle applied for a job at DigitalSports.

No. 4 — Beam Me Up
S.M.A.C., Maryland — In a one-point win over Chopticon, Lackey senior Rashad Beam coasts in for an emphatic two-handed jam. The Chargers are 16-2 this season. That fact was added because the first sentence was too short, especially for a play ranked fourth.

No. 3 — Billy Quest for Four
Northern Region, Virginia — Lake Braddock senior George Billy won the Patriot District title (119-pound) with progressively-faster pins in his three matches. Billy won the 103-pound state title at Robinson as a freshman, the 112-pound state title as a sophomore in Nebraska at Boys Town High — where he was 34-0 — and the 112-pound state title at Lake Braddock last year. He entered his senior season with a 133-8 career record.

No. 2 — McDonald Super Sizes Scores
Prince William County, Virginia — Osbourn Park senior Megan McDonald won three individual events — bar, beam, and floor — en route to an all-around Cedar Run District title. She scored a 9.625 on beam as the Yellow Jackets took the team title.

No. 1 — Larson Leap
Loudoun County, Virginia — In the Raiders six-point overtime win over the Spartans, Loudoun County senior Tyler Larson breaks ahead of the pack and rises up for a contested throwdown. Plus, a Joe Bushrod sighting for your viewing pleasure.

The Paul Monitor #4: Ten Things I Think I Think

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager
Remember last week’s column? You know, when I said that I really hated not being able to work? Yeah, this week, I really didn’t even have a moment to breath, much less sleep (I’ll get to that later). There’s so much that I would like to talk about that I decided to steal from a much better writer — Sports Illustrated’s Peter King — and just throw as much as I can out there and see what sticks. Everybody take a deep breath, this should get interesting.

Ten Things I Think I Think
1. Whatever Potomac’s Quiana Kizer and Kyani Jacobs ate for breakfast on Friday morning, give me some of that. The two Panthers combined for 35 of Potomac’s 44 points in a win over Forest Park — the Bruins’ first regular-season district loss since 2006. How much have the Panthers improved since the beginning of January? They lost to Forest Park, 73-49, in their first meeting. Sure, a lot of credit has to go to a certain new coach on the sidelines, but man, Kizer and Jacobs took it to the crazy-talented Bruins.

2. I think the Battlefield girls gymnastics team’s near-victory at the Cedar Run District Championships proves how exciting high school gymnastics can be and how much it would stink if it’s cut out of the budget. Gymnastics looks to be getting the axe in Fairfax County and Prince William can’t be that far behind. Of course, I understand the current economic climate and how much gymnastics teams cost the schools — I’m just saying it was fun ride on Wednesday night.

3. I think that I’m also extremely excited about the possibility of Osbourn Park’s Jacquie Teets performing at the Northwest Region tournament. Coach Mandy Seal told me that Teets has been working on a bars routine for the Feb. 14 meet. Teets was injured in a horrific car accident last summer and has not been able to perform for the Yellow Jackets all year. Seal said that her absence has been tough on the team and everybody is looking forward to her possible return. This being my first year in Prince William, I have yet to see Teets — a key component in the Yellow Jackets’ back-to-back state titles — perform. It’s bravery and determination like this that makes me love high school sports.

4. I think that the Forest Park wrestling team is good — like, really good. At the Cardinal District meet, the Bruins had seven first-place finishers and three second-place finishers. There’s only 14 events, mind you. That means that the Bruins had a wrestler in the finals in all but four weight classes. That’s impressive.

4a. I also think that this was a really good idea and plan on doing it again real soon. Why do all work when I can get a charismatic athlete to do it for me? As my teachers used to say, “Paul, stop talking.”

5. I think that I’ve also noted something very interesting during my three years of watching high school wrestling. In high school, competition can get a little ****. Tempers can flair and things can get a little heated. I see it all the time on basketball courts and football fields. I **** all that macho bravado. Do the players know how embarrassing that they look in a stare-down during the first quarter of a 7-5 basketball game? You know where I don’t see that though? On the wrestling mat. In a sport dripping with testosterone, not once have I seen kids — who are trained to physically dominate opponents — lose their head. I fact, I see the opposite. After a particularly close match between Forest Park’s Josh Moore and Woodbridge’s Evan Greenleaf on Saturday — one in which Moore pulled out a 20-19 victory — both wrestler embraced in the center of the mat. I was impressed by the level of respect both wrestlers showed to one another. That’s a credit to their coaches and the sport as a whole.

6. I think that the 7 a.m. signing ceremony for the Woodbridge football players nearly killed me. Being in a profession where getting to bed by 3 a.m. is considered “hitting the sack early”, a 5:30 a.m. wake-up call is ******. I didn’t even bother going to sleep. I was glad to be there, don’t get me wrong, but I think Red Bull and Valentine’s Day-colored donuts from 7-11 were the only two things keeping me going.

7. I think that I should also give kudos to Stonewall Jackson High School for a very nice National Signing Day ceremony for Damien Thigpen. Being a closet Notre Dame fan (don’t tell anybody), I was secretly hoping he would sign with the Irish, but UCLA makes a heck of a lot of sense for the speedster.

8. I think that these are my Top 5 boys basketball teams right now:

1. Gar-Field
2. Potomac
3. Woodbridge
4. C.D. Hylton
5. Battlefield

Honestly — and I’ve said this from day one — I have no clue. I still firmly believe that any team in the Cardinal District can beat any other team. There is no way to pick winners. I have the Indians at No. 1 because of their nice win over Hylton on Friday. Woodbridge’s win on Friday and Saturday gives them the No. 3 spot and the Panthers are at No. 2 despite the loss to the Vikings on Saturday. Battlefield, I just don’t know. At one point they were 7-0 in the Cedar Run and I declared them locks to win it. They’ve had a mini-meltdown as of late but I’ll keep them in the No. 5 slot.

9. I think that these are my Top 5 girls basketball teams right now:

1. Forest Park
2. Stonewall Jackson
3. Osbourn Park
4. Potomac
5. Woodbridge

Not much changing from last week. I don’t put much stock in the Bruins’ loss to Potomac. I great win for the Panthers, sure, but not a huge loss for Forest Park. Stonewall continues to roll and the Yellow Jackets have been impressive all year. Of course, Potomac gets a bump from their victory and I still like the Viking girls.

10. I think that everybody should join the Prince William DigitalSports’ Facebook Group and add “PrinceWilliam DigitalSports” as a friend. Those cocky jerks over in the Northern Region copied me and already have over 200 friends. We’re sitting just below 100. That don’t sit right with your boy.

Enough about me. What do you think?

Eagles Earn Manassas Bragging Rights

By Paul Frommelt

The last time the Eagles met their cross-town rivals from Osbourn Park, they needed a three-pointer at the buzzer to escape with a 70-69 win. No such last-second heroics were needed on Friday night, as the Osbourn boys basketball team beat the Yellow Jackets, 94-78, in front of a raucous home crowd.

“We played our game tonight. We were aggressive. We attacked them early, ” said Osbourn head coach Mike Dufrene, whose team’s 94 points was a season high. “That is to our game. We are aggressive on offense and defense and when
we are walking the ball up the floor and not putting any pressure, we
are playing somebody else’s game. When we are playing a transition game, we just play. We don’t worry about mistakes. We just play.”

Despite trailing 20-13 at the end of the first half, Dufrene was pleased with what he saw on the court. With a combined 32 fouls in the first half alone, both teams were in foul trouble early. Osbourn was already in the double-bonus at the foul line by the end of the 1st quarter and, more importantly, had gotten the Yellow Jackets’ Andrew Brookins in foul trouble early.

“We have bodies. We have interchangeable parts,” said Dufrene. “It was a big key for [Brookins] to go to the bench early. It opened things up.”

In the two team’s first meeting, Brookins exploded for 21 points and 19 rebounds. Brookins sat out the entire second quarter on Friday night and had only four points at halftime. Brookins did score 19 second-half points, but by that time, the Eagles had already established the tempo of the game.

“We did a heck of a job against him tonight,” said Dufrene.

Nine players contributed to the Eagles’ impressive offensive output, with Austin Elder leading the way with 16 points. Chaz Bates (15 points), Cory Turner (14), Robert Carter (14) and Jay Lane (14) all scored in double-digits for Osbourn.

“It was a total team effort,” said Dufrene. “Everybody did their job. We played for 32 — almost 32 minutes.”

The game, which packed the Osbourn High School gym with fans from both sides, will be the last district meeting between the two teams for — presumably — the next few years. Next year, the Yellow Jackets will move from the Cedar Run District to the Cardinal.

“Osbourn Park and Osbourn — it goes back to when they first opened both schools back in the 70s. This is a great rivalry. I **** to see it go away because they move out of our district next year. I think that we will always play each other and there will always be that excitement,” said Dufrene. “This game, it’s about the communities. The players play the game, but if you saw the crowd, it’s about our fans, our pep band, our cheerleaders, our step team. It’s about everybody getting involved in the game. It makes you feel good when you are able to show your appreciation to the fans for all the support that they give you throughout the years.”

McDonald Leads Yellow Jackets to Another Title

By Paul Frommelt

Osbourn Park junior gymnast Megan McDonald was asked if she would allow herself some time to celebrate the Yellow Jackets’ third consecutive Cedar Run District championship and her individual all-around title after Wednesday night’s district meet at Stonewall Jackson High School.

“Not really,” she said with a laugh. “I have a meet on Friday and Saturday. I’m going to be competing for the next five weeks. I don’t have a free weekend between high school and club. Don’t get me wrong. I get real tired. [But] it’s so worth it.”

McDonald, also a member of the Apollo Gymnastics competitive program, doesn’t really have the time to pat herself on the back. Leave that to her teammates, as the junior’s first-place finish in bars, beam and floor helped the Yellow Jackets sneak by Battlefield, 146.475 to 146.050.

Battlefield, who was sitting in third place after the first two events, was a surprise for the Yellow Jackets, who had a big lead at the time. The Bobcats nailed their last two events, while Osbourn Park faltered — just a little — on the beam.

“They finished their last two events really strong and we didn’t. We are obviously better than that. We’ll just get our nervousness out,” said McDonald. “I would rather did it here than anywhere else. We got it out of our system and now we can go back to the gym and fix it.”

Coaches Monica Brown and Mandy Seal agreed.

“It was a different story for us. Normally, we are a lot more dominant,” said Seal. “The girls were a little shaken up tonight. A little out of their element. Their nerves were getting to them for a while. They don’t like going on beam last. We had a lot of falls that we don’t normally have.”

“Get the bugs out now, because it is really going to matter next meet,” she told her team. “Get this out of the way now.”

The two-time defending Group AAA state champions will travel to Stafford High School on Feb. 14 for the Northwest Region tournament.

Turner, Battlefield Impress at District Meet

In her first Cedar Run Districts gymnastics championship since her freshman year, Battlefield junior Erin Turner excelled. The Bobcat gymnast finished second in the individual all-around competition with a second-place finish on the vault and floor, and a  third-place finish on the beam and bars.

Turner, however, was just happy that she and her teammates were able to advance to regionals.

“That was my goal, to make it to regionals and for the team to make it to regionals. I was really happy,” she said. “We want to take it one step at a time. If you think about the future, you could mess up what’s happening now. We just want to take it step-by-step.”

The Bobcats finished second to Osbourn Park in the team competition, just missing first place by a score of 146.475 to 146.050. After the first two events, the Bobcats were stuck in third behind the Yellow Jackets and Loudoun Valley. The top two teams advance to the regional competition.

“We just wanted to make it to regionals, so we needed to step it up,” said Turner. “First place would have been great, but second place is what we needed overall.”

Megan McDonald won the all-around competition with a score of 38.275, followed by Turner (37.8), Osbourn Park’s Caity Cantello (37.525) and Battlefield’s Mandy Brown (37.0).
