Healthy Bobcats Advance to Second Round

If the first round of the Cedar Run District boys basketball tournament tipped off just a few days earlier, the Battlefield Bobcats’ triple-threat on offense would have been a one-man show.
“I’ll say this, I’m glad our next game is on Monday,” said Battlefield head coach Al Ford after the Bobcats’ regular-season finale against Loudoun Valley on Feb. 11. In that game, senior forward Dion Romeo left early in the first quarter due to an ankle injury. Senior forward Tim Horn was also sidelined for that game against the Vikings thanks to an elbow in the face a week earlier. The Bobcats’ five-day break gave both seniors a chance to get healthy. Monday night’s game against Osbourn Park showed just how important those five days were.
Romeo and Horn joined junior guard James Robinson to combine for 46 of the Bobcats’ 69 points in their 69-62 win over the Yellow Jackets at home.
“To his credit, he stepped up and fought through it,” said Battlefield assistant coach Ray Chambers of Romeo. “He just went through the pain. That’s what we expected from him.”
“There was a lot of pain,” confirmed Romeo, who finished with 13 points. “I just had to play through it.”
Horn and Romeo were also key on defense, helping guard against Osbourn Park’s Andrew Brookins, who was held to just four field goals on the night.
Earlier in the day, Ford and his coaching staff made the Bobcats’ practiced playing with a lead. The Bobcats did beat the Yellow Jackets twice during the regular season, but the two team’s most recent meeting needed overtime to decide a winner.
“We practiced being able to close it out and part of that is getting it on the free throw line,” said Chambers.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Bobcats held a nine-point lead. Just like in practice a few hours earlier, the Bobcats’ spent the majority of the final quarter at the foul line. Battlefield took 22 shots from the charity stripe, hitting 15 — which included going 8-for-10 down the stretch.
“We just had to get our key players in the game so we could knock down the free throws,” said Robinson, who finished with a game-high 19 points.
The win sends the second-seeded Bobcats into the second round of the tournament against Stonewall Jackson on Wednesday night. If top-seeded Fauquier beats Loudoun Valley on Wednesday, the Bobcats’ game against the Raiders could mean a trip to the Northwest Region tournament.
“I know Stonewall wants us, but we want them just as bad,” said Robinson. “It’s going to be an intense matchup.”
The Bobcats split the season series with the Raiders during the regular season, but lost by 21 points in their most recent meeting on Feb. 6.
“All I’m going to say is that we have to take care of business and that’s what we’re going to do,” said Robinson.

Prince William has five wrestlers in the Northwest Region finals, set for tonight at 6 p.m. At 103, Battlefield’s Brooks Martino pinned Son Nguyen of Colonial Forge in the semifinals to set up a finals match with Greg Flournoy from Fauquier. As expected, the Bobcats’ Beau Martino will face Fauquier’s Ryan Hunsberger at 112. Martino has beaten Hunsberger five consecutive times in the postseason, including a Cedar Run District finals win last week. Hunsberger beat Martino last month during a regular-season match.

At 119, Osbourn Park’s Eric Dromazos will face Colonial Forge’s Shane Gentry. Dromazos beat Riverbend’s Joe Etcho in a 3-1 decision to advance. Freedom’s Jorge Mendez won a major decision, 21-9, over Halifax County’s Justin Perkins to advance to the finals against North Stafford’s Jesse Wiley.

Woodbridge’s Jay Weatherington also advances to the finals at heavyweight, pinning Fauquier’s Kevin Friend in the third period, in one of the best matches of the semifinals round.

Wrestling: Northwest Region Championships

Martino Wins Third Northwest Title

By Paul Frommelt
Prince William Content Manager

pfrommelt@digitalsports.com

This much is certain for Battlefield’s Beau Martino — winning a title means wrestling Fauquier’s Ryan Hunsberger. Over the past three years, Martino has wrestled Hunsberger eight times. Last year, Martino met Hunsberger in the 103-pound Cedar Run District, Northwest Region and AAA Virginia state finals and won all three times. This year, both moved up to the 112-pound weight class and the story has remained the same. Martino celebrated his third-consecutive Northwest Region title on Saturday with a 6-1 overtime decision over Hunsberger — one week after besting the Falcons’ junior in the district tournament.

“It’s a tough match every time,” said Martino, who sports a 6-2 record over Hunsberger. “I go out there, I just know that I have to wrestle hard against him. He’s a real good wrestler. I expect that every time, it’s going to be close.”

As with the majority on their matches, Saturday’s final was a close contest. The first three periods ended with a 1-1 tie, each earning an escape for the only points of the match. In the first overtime period, however, Martino scored a takedown and nearly pinned the Falcons’ wrestler, earning three more back points and the victory.

After the final whistle blew, Martino jumped up and pumped his fist.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “The second [title] felt the best, but this one isn’t far behind.”

Martino will enter the AAA Virginia state finals as the top seed at 112. The second seed? Hunsberger.

“I wouldn’t doubt it,” said Martino when asked if he expects to see Hunsberger again this year. “I want to be a two-time state champion. That is my goal.”

Mendez Wins First Title, Weatherington Takes 2nd

All throughout the week, Freedom’s Jorge Mendez fantasized about being in the Northwest Region finals. The two-time Cardinal District champion wanted to know what it would feel like to compete on that kind of stage. After Mendez’s 5-2 victory over North Stafford’s Jesse Wiley in the 189-pound finals, he now knows what it feels like to not only compete on that stage, but to win.

“You can’t compare it,” said Mendez after being asked to compare his two district titles to his new Northwest crown. “I wanted to live up to my own expectations and what I can do.”

Woodbridge’s Jay Weatherington missed his introduction during a pre-finals ceremony on Saturday night. You’ll have to excuse the Vikings’ heavyweight, he’s never competed in a region finals match. He’s never wrestled in Northwest Region meet. In fact, before this year, Weatherington had never even stepped on a mat.

The senior, who has a full football scholarship to Liberty University, spoke with Woodbridge head football coach Keith King after the football season about a way to stay in shape during the offseason. King told him to give wrestling a try.

“He said, ‘Wrestle, It’s free and you will be in the best shape of your life.’ I went and tried it and I liked it a lot,” said Weatherington.

He’s was also pretty darn good.

After winning the Cardinal District title, Weatherington found himself in the Northwest Region finals after a dramatic pin over Brooke Point’s Nick Martin in the semifinals.

“It’s a lot of strength and a little bit of skill and a lot of luck,” said Weatherington when asked of his wrestling style.

Although he lost in a 4-0 decision against Liberty’s Korey Gough in the finals, Weatherington advances to his first-ever state tournament next week.

As for what wrestling has taught the football star this year: “It’s the hardest six minutes of my life.”

Weatherington was one of three Prince William wrestlers to take second place at the championships. Osbourn Park’s Eric Dromazos took the silver at 119 pounds and Beau’s younger brother, freshman Brooks Martino nearly kept the 103-pound title in the family, placing second to Fauquier’s Greg Flournoy.

Other area wrestlers placing in the top four were, Forest Park’s Issac Riddle (4th, 112), Battlefield’s Matt Bowman (3rd, 130), Stonewall Jackson’s Luke Olsen (3rd, 140), Forest Park’s Sheridan Stackpole (4th, 140), Gar-Field’s A.J. Baggott (4th, 145), Forest Park’s Patrick Budd (3rd, 152), Woodbridge’s Matt Smith (4th, 152), Battlefield’s Peter Psihas (3rd, 215) and Forest Park’s Christian Botero (4th, 285).

Battlefield had the best team finish for Prince William, placing fourth with 107 points. Forest Park came in sixth with 96.50 points, while Woodbridge finished ninth with 72.50 points.

Fauquier Takes Home Cedar Run Title

By Paul Frommelt

pfrommelt@digitalsports.com

The Fauquier Falcons took the 2009 Cedar Run District crown on Saturday afternoon at Loudoun Valley High School with seven individual medal winners on the day. The Falcons had eight individual medal winners and placed in the points in 12 of the 14 weight classes, en route to a l23-point victory over second-place Loudoun Valley. The Battlefield Bobcats came in third with a score of 156.

Fauquier got victories from Greg Flournoy (103), Andrew Richards (125), Connor Miller (135), Neil McGuire (140), Van Grimes (145), Chris Moon (152), Daniel McGillivray (160) and Jacob Fahlfeder (171). McGillvray, was a Group A state champion at 160 pounds last year for Manassas Park and is currently ranked first in the state by VirginiaWrestling.com. The website also lists Flournoy as the top wrestler in the state.

The Vikings, despite not have a single individual winner, earned second by placing 10 wrestlers in the top four. Three wrestlers — Cole Hilling (152), Alex O’Connor (215) and Zach Bolan (171), advanced to the championship round for the Vikings.

Battlefield’s Beau Martino (112) added another chapter to his rivalry with Fauquier’s Ryan Hunsberger with a 3-2 decision in the final match. Martino has beat Hunsberger in the district, region and state tournament final round at 103 last year. Hunsberger got the best of Martino last month during the regular season. Battlefield Girls Lift Indoor Track Trophy for First Time

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager

pfrommelt@digitalsports.com

Cedar Run District Indoor Track Video Interviews! Battlefield’s Diana Budreika; Battlefield’s Genevieve Johnson; Battlefield’s Tyler Smith; Battlefield’s Jairus Akannie; Osbourn Park’s Nolan Compton; Osbourn Park’s Kayla Tyrrell; Stonewall Jackson’s Hope Flomo; Stonewall Jackson’s Damien Thigpen.

With every painful step, Battlefield senior Diana Budreika was reminded of why she was running. Placed around the track were her teammates, all cheering her on. Every few meters, she would see another encouraging face. Everybody — including Budreika — knew the importance of the girls 3200 meter run.

Budreika, one of the top distance runners on a team built for shorter distances, has been battling an ankle injury for the better part of three weeks. Her training regime leading up the the district meet was a steady diet of swimming and biking. So after the girls 1600 run during Friday’s meet at Osbourn Park High School, Budreika felt like she’d had enough. She was scheduled to run the two mile, but decided that she was going to sit that event out. That’s when Battlefield head coach Paul Mobley informed Budreika of the situation.

“I knew, point-wise, with the strength of the Osbourn Park girls distance
team, we were going to need her to run the 3200 and score something,” said Mobley.

Heading into the final two events, Battlefield held a 27-point lead over the Yellow Jackets. Osbourn Park, however, was poised to sweep the 3200 and win the girls 4×400 relay, giving them 41 points and the victory. With the Bobcats’ 4×400 relay team expected to earn eight points with a second-place finish, Mobley needed Budreika to run — and run well.

“We had to have at least a fourth-place finish,” said Mobley.

So Budreika ran — and ran well. The Battlefield senior finished in third place to help the Bobcats girls win their first-ever Cedar Run District indoor track title, edging out Osbourn Park, 171-165.

“That was a very gutsy run — a very gutsy performance by her,” said Mobley. “That was the difference for us.”

Budreika’s gutsy performance was one of many for the Bobcats on the day. Junior Genevieve Johnson was the leading scorer for the Bobcats, winning the 55 meter dash and the girls shot put, as well as placing third in the 300 meter dash. She was also part of the Battlefield girls 4×200 meter relay that finished second.

Johnson, who had never thrown that shot put before this year, won the event by over three feet.

“This was the first year that we tried it. I knew that being a sprinter,
with the leg strength, that she would be a good shot putter. It has
worked out that way,” said Mobley. “It’s the leg strength, the coordination and the desire to do something for the team.”

Johnson’s 55 meter win was much closer, as she edged Stonewall Jackson’s Hope Flomo by .01 seconds.

“A lot of the girls really stepped up today. It wasn’t just winning the
events. It was about the third, fourth, fifth-place finishes,” said Mobley. “All those
points added up. Every point counts today, whether it is first place or
sixth place. Every point counts. That is what they were going for and
they came through like champs for us today.”

Added Johnson: “We came ready to run today.”

Battlefield Boys Take Trophy

The Bobcat boys had a much easier time winning their third-consecutive indoor track title, beating second-place Osbourn Park by 50 points. With individual wins by junior Sebastian Paniagua (500 meter, 1:06.82), senior Matt Shaughnessy (1000 meter, 2:40.59, meet record), freshman Jairus Akannie (high jump, 5-08.00), sophomore Byron Sintim (long jump, 19-10.50) and senior Tyler Smith (shot put, 44-09.00), the Bobcat boys had plenty of contributors in the victory.

The win continues Battlefield’s streak of eight consecutive district championships through cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

“Nobody wants to be the team that snaps the streak,” said Mobley.

Thigpen, Karabinus Lead Top Finishers

Stonewall Jackson’s Damien Thigpen and Osbourn Park’s Ariel Karabinus were named runners of the year in the Cedar Run District after both won two events at the meet.

Thigpen, who recently signed to play football and run track at UCLA, won the boys 55 (6.39) and 300 (34.68, meet record) meter dash and was part of the Raiders’ gold medal 4×200 team (1:31.39, meet record). Karabinus won the girls 3200 (11:34.64) and 100 (3:05.46, meet record) meter runs. Osbourn Park’s Kayla Tyrrell earned the top seed in the state with a meet record 1:14.14 in the girls 500 meter dash, while Stonewall Jackson’s Flomo avenged her 55 meter loss with a win in the 300 meter dash (42.61).

The Osbourn Park boys also had a pair of long distance winners, with senior Richard Arena winning the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:25.24 and Nolan Compton setting a meet record in the boys 1600 meter run with a time of 4:28.14.
