Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Lee Highway
Whitman senior catcher Danny Lee crushes a two-run homer an estimated 390 feet towards Rt. 29 — named Lee Highway in Virginia — in a 17-7
win over Paint Branch. Lee the catcher went 4-for-5 on the day and
hit his only home run of last season at the same field, but just to the
right.

with :10.7 seconds left in the first quarter as the Bears beat IAC rival
St. Albans, 5-1.
Stearn Warning — It’s the second inning and Patuxent is already up on Leonardtown, 5-2, despite troubles at the plate — and when you’re doing things
like this, you can get away with that. Panther senior Matt Stearns crosses the plate
on the tail end of the double steal to make it 6-2 Panthers.
White Jack’et — Osbourn Park senior Nate White hits a three-run bomb in the third
inning of the Let’s Play Two Tournament third-place game. White had 4
RBI and the Yellow jackets dominated, 11-0.
Ryan Mink at House of Speed — Click here to watch full-grown man — and DigitalSports correspondent — Ryan Mink get worked in speed drills by elementary-school children.

No. 10 –– Brothers Keepers
Twisted Bixler
Tiffany Cup — In a Group 2 match between Great Falls Elite and Freestate Soccer Alliance, GFA goalkeeper Mark Bixler (Hidden Valley; Roanoke, Va.) comes up big with this save — and hold — off a Freestate corner in GFA’s 2-0 win.

Won’t Be Fooled Again
Lancashire County, England
— Blackburn Rovers FC goalkeeper Matthew Urwin punches away this well-placed volley by U.S. National Team pool player and Great Falls Elite striker Dylan Bowman (James River; Midlothian, Va.) in the 13th minute. Rovers beat GFA, 2-0, but fell to Real Madrid CF in the final, 3-0.

No. 9 –Swearing In
S.M.A.C., Maryland
— At the plate, Leonardtown senior Cody Towles flies out to Patuxent senior Mike Swearingen in right field. As Raider Brady Jameson — who had just hit an RBI triple — tries to score from third, Swearingen’s throw beats him to the plate for a momentum-grabbing, inning-ending out.

No. 8 — Lundeen Trifecta
Northern Region, Virginia
— Langley junior attack Jack Lundeen scores a trio of goals at the Saxons improve to 8-0 for the first time in school history with their 6-5 win over Loudoun Valley.

No. 7 –Fortes Bragg

Northern Region, Virginia

No. 6 –Vieira Riding Dirty
Prince William County, Virginia
— In the Let’s Play Two Tournament title game, Potomac sophomore Kyle Vieira shows some shiftiness in the base paths with this face-first slide across the plate. There is more available from this game further in the countdown.

No. 5 –Schu’ In
Northern Region, Virginia
— Annandale junior Ryan Schubert went 3-for-5 at the plate, including a two-run double and two-run triple, finishing with 5 RBI. Atom reliever also entered a high-scoring game, allowing no runs and no hits in 1.1 IP as Annandale beat Mount Vernon, 15-10.

No. 4 –Technicolor Dream Coates  1  2
Prince George’s County, Maryland  — In the underclassmen game of the Capitol Hoops DMV Jamboree at Roosevelt High School, Gwynn Park sophomore Tion Coates held his own private dunk contest in the all-star game with an array of high-flying jams.

No. 3 –Robinson Pays Homage
Prince William County, Virginia
— “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks, a Baseball Hall of Fame member and lifelong Chicago Cub, coined the phrase “Let’s Play Two.” In the tournament bearing the same name, Woodbridge senior LF Josh Robinson makes a Gold-Glove caliber diving catch. But Potomac went on to win, 7-5.

No. 2 –Isaiah 40:
Independent Schools, D.C. — Isaiah 40:31 says, “… They will bear you up on wings like eagles…” Montrose Christian senior Isaiah Armwood showed that kind of ornithological altitude —  a 40-inch vertical — by jumping over seven people in the Capital Classic Dunk Contest at Gonzaga. Armwood’s dunk was named No. 1 in the SportsCenter Top 10 on Thursday.

No. 1 — Perfect Mitch
S.M.A.C., Maryland — McDonough senior Melanie Mitchell threw a perfect game against Thomas Stone on Wednesday. Mitchell struck out 16 of the 21 batters she faced as the still-undefeated Rams beat the previously-undefeated Cougars, 9-0. Boys’ Soccer: Blackburn Rovers FC 2, GFA Elite 0

By Phil Murphy

Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

*Click the links on the top-left for full video and photo coverage from Thursday’s games.*

With its tournament life at stake, Great Falls Elite rattled off repeated scoring chances against Blackburn Rovers FC.

Unfortunately for the team from Fairfax County, Va., however, the last line of English defense was true to form.

Blackburn goalkeeper Matthew Urwin had five saves — and was assisted by a pair of open-goal blocked shots by his back line — en route to a clean sheet and a 2-0 win for the Premiere League side at Georgetown University on Thursday, which locked up a berth in the Tiffany Cup championship.

“It’s always good,” Urwin said of his shutout. “If you keep the clean sheet, you don’t lose, do you? It’s always good to keep the clean sheet.”

While shutouts make losses impossible, wins require goals.

And in the sixth minute, Blackburn striker Jason Blanton — a U-17 England National Team call-up — earned one for the visitors on a free kick.

The one-goal lead held for the remainder of the first half, despite several threats to goal from GFA Elite.

The most menacing chance was an artful volley by midfielder Dylan Bowman — a U-17 Men’s National Team pool player — that Urwin frayed with a leaping left-handed punch in the 13th minute.

But it was not until the 61st minute that the club from Northwest England lengthened its margin.

Bowman made a long run down the left channel before firing a low shot that was kicked to the top of the box by GFA keeper Mark Bixler. Rovers midfielder Filip Pivkovski settled the rebound, dribbled to the end line and played a ball to midfielder James Knowles at the top of the six.

Knowles stretched the net with a smooth, right-footed strike, all but clinching a win and a championship game berth with Real Madrid CF at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va., on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“It takes pressure of you,” said Urwin of Knowles’ insurance goal. “You still have to work hard, but it keeps pressure of you.

“That’s a bit better, isn’t it?”

Added Knowles, a Northern Ireland youth national team member: “It gives us more time to relax and we can bring players off, which gives us more time to relax for the final.”

Panthers Take 2009 “Let’s Play 2” Tournament Crown

Potomac’s Edgar Quinones entered the “Let’s Play 2” spring break tournament with a .154 batting average. He ended it with a Most Valuable Player medal hanging around his neck.

“This is the first time that I ever got anything in anything,” said the Panthers’ catcher after a 3-for-4 performance on Wednesday afternoon helped Potomac beat Woodbridge, 7-5, in the tournament’s championship game. Quinones drove in three runs to help the Panthers cap a 3-1 run in the tournament and establish themselves as one of the hottest teams in the area.

“That’s baseball,” said Potomac head coach Mike Covington of Quinones’s turnaround. “He has been on fire.”

Quinones got things started for the Panthers against Woodbridge, knocking a bases-loaded two-run single in the first inning and then added another RBI single in the second to put the Potomac up 5-2 after two.

“I wasn’t swinging the bat really well,” said Quinones of his early performance. “Today I was seeing the ball really well.”

With Quinones leading the way on offense, Potomac pitcher Tyler Vieira took control from the mound. The submarine pitcher came in to relieve starting pitcher Patrick Moriarty in the first inning and induced 12 grounders to pick up the victory.

“We would be hurting right now if it wasn’t for him,” said Covington of Vieira, who has appeared in all but one game for the Panthers this year.

Vieira utilized a slow-moving sinker to induce inning-ending groundouts in the first, third, fourth and fifth.

“The point is to let them hit it,” said Vieira, who still recorded four strikeouts in the game, including a game-ending strikeout with the tying run at the plate in the seventh.

With non-district wins over Forest Park and Woodbridge in the tournament, the Panthers ended the week with plenty of momentum.

“This is a chance to make statement a little bit, at least put it in their mind that we are still the top dogs until somebody takes it away,” said Covington. “I felt like we played with a little more edge today, with a little more excitement.”

After a disappointing 11-10 loss to Woodbridge on Monday, the Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets came back with a vengeance on Wednesday afternoon in the “Let’s Play 2” consolation game, beating Forest Park, 11-0, in a mercy rule five-inning contest. Osbourn Park pitchers Nick Walker and Zach Bargeron combined to no-hit the Bruins as the Yellow Jackets scored seven times in the first inning to earn the dominating victory.

“You gotta tip your hat when you see that kind of stuff going on,” said Osbourn Park head coach Rod Hodgson of his two pitchers, who combined for for 12 strikeouts on the day, including six consecutive to finish the game.

Against Woodbridge, the Yellow Jackets came back from an early 7-0 deficit, only to watch their three-run lead falter late.

“They were bummed out,” said Hodgson. “[It’s] our first loss of the year. Losing is never a good thing, but maybe that was.”

Hodgson said that he saw much better discipline at the plate against the Bruins. The Yellow Jackets’ earned four walks in their seven-run first inning against Forest Park, compared to six strikeouts against Woodbridge in their first time through the lineup on Monday.

“We addressed our game with Woodbridge, how we were flat,” said Hodgson. “We looked like we lost a bit of our discipline as the plate. It seemed like everybody wanted to hit it over the left field fence. It looks like they changed their approach today, didn’t it?”

Osbourn Park, Battlefield Claim City County Titles

Click on the “Photos” and “Videos”
links above for pictures and video highlights from the event.

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Editor

The Osbourn Park girls outdoor track and field team held off Battlefield to take The Running Store 2009 City County Championships at Osbourn Park High School on Wednesday. As was the case during the winter season, the result was by the slimmest of margins, with the Yellow Jackets edging the Bobcats, 109-107.

The Yellow Jackets’ endurance runner racked up the bulk of Osbourn Park’s points with Kayla Tyrrell, Ariel Karabinus, Natalie Gelata and Natalie Wybersky each contributing top-two finishes. Tyrrell took home the girls 400-meter dash title with a time of 59.79 seconds, while Karabinus broke the meet record in the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.68. Geleta and Wybersky took second in the girls mile and two-mile, respectively. The Osbourn Park girls also took home victories in the girls 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Battlefield took on the Yellow Jackets’ endurance with speed on the short track and an impressive showing in the field events.

Genevieve Johnson lead the way for Battlefield, taking first in the girls 100-meter dash with a meet-record time of 12.62 and took second in the 200-meter run with a time of 26.83. Battlefield’s Shannon Anderson won the girls high jump with a distance of 4 feet, 10 inches, while teammate Nikkisha Walker took second in 100 hurdles (16.46) and second in the triple jump with a distance of 31-11.25. A day earlier, Brea Zeise took second in the pole vault with a height of 9-06.00.

Brentsville took third in the team competition with 97 points, thanks in large part to Mariama Bello, who won the girls shot put (31-11.25) and discus throw (90-06.00). Teammate Morgan Price won the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:46.81.

Gar-Field finished in fourth with 90 points. The Indians’ Celina Vanegas won the pole vault with a meet-record height of 9-06.00 and took thrid in the triple jump (31-05.50). Francesca McClaude won the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.29 and won the long jump with a distance of 15-08.00. McClaude also took fourth in the triple jump.

Top individual performances at the meet included Potomac’s Yvonne Amegashie first-place finishes in the girls 200-meter dash (25.99) and the 300-meter hurdles (46.02). Panther Lauren Coleman won the girls triple jump (31-11.25), while Woodbridge’s Michelle Britto took the girls 1600-meter run with a time of 5:21.71.

The team competition on the boys side was less dramatic, with Battlefield earning a 24-point victory over second-place Forest Park (119). The Osbourn Park boys took third (76), while Woodbridge (73) and Gar-Field (65.50) rounded out the top five.

Battlefield’s Matt Shaughnessy won the 800 meter run with a time of
2:01.60. Teammates Nathan Moyer (2nd, 2:02.49) and Sebastian Paniagua
(3rd, 2:03.13) helped complete a Bobcat sweep of the top three spots in
the event. Battlefield finished nine runners in the points in the three
distance events. Battlefield also got some help from Byron Sintim, who won the boys long jump with a 20-08.00 and was second in the triple jump with a 41-03.25.

Fresh off of a AAA state title during the winter season, Woodbridge’s Isaiah
Simmons
dominated the shot put, throwing a meet-record 56-08.00.
Simmons also took home the gold in the discus, again setting a meet
record with a distance of 149-03.00. Another defending AAA state champion, Stonewall Jackson’s Damien Thigpen won the boys 300-meter hurdles with a meet record time of 39.15.

Other top finishes from the boys side included Forest Park’s Gary Schelsinger (100-meter dash, 11.18), Brentsville’s Erik Kelly (200-meter, 23.35), Woodbridge’s Ramon Mathis (400-meter dash, 51.35), Osbourn Park’s Nolan Compton (1600-meter run, 4:33.49), Brentsville’s Andrew Hull (3200-meter run, 10:13.79), Gar-Field’s Clinton Burrell (110-meter hurdles, 15.04), Gar-Field’s Derrick Knight (high jump, 5-10.00), Forest Park’s John Brennan (pole vault, 14-06.00) and Stonewall Jackson’s Kevin Parks (triple jump, 42-01.00).
