Purcellville (Dec. 12, 2008) – Wynton Wilson scored 29 points Friday to lead the Osbourn Park High School boys basketball team past Loudoun Valley Friday night, 65-51, for a AAA Cedar Run District road victory.
The Yellow Jackets (2-1, 3-2) used a 23-12 advantage in the second quarter to take control of the contest and then out-scored the Vikes (0-1, 0-2) by 10 in the third quarter to take a 21-point lead into the final quarter.
The Loudoun Valley students supported their basketball team with pregame tailgating and a crazy “Jungle”, student section. The start showed signs that it was going to be a long night with the score 2-2 midway through the first quarter, until Viking Django Degree’s layup broke the tie with 4:05 remaining.
Osbourn Park came out strong in the second quarter with Wilson adding a quick five points to the scoreboard. The Vikings continued to respond with Drew MacMahon finding Ryan Mueller and then later Cody Mangano sending a long pass to Degree to end the half. OP stretched its lead to 33-22 at the half.
As time ticked on in the second half, the intensity seemed to rise, resulting in an Osbourn Park flagrant foul and MacMahon sinking both free throws. The Vikings began putting a run together, but was halted by Wilson’s back to back steals and baskets.
James Hemphill put in solid minutes for the Vikings and managed to draw a foul on a layup, leading to a three-point play, but OP continued to extend its lead, posting a 49-28 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Vikings came out in the fourth quarter with a quick put back by John Yoxthimer and a MacMahon free throw off of an OP technical foul.
The game remained extremely aggressive, with both teams reaching the double bonus with 5:30 still in play.
OP stayed strong behind their guard Wilson and did not slow down. Connor Trombley came alive for the Vikings scoring 11 points duriing the final six minutes of the game. Trombley continued to drive on the Jackets but it was too little, too late for the Vikes. Trombley’s competitive play as met by rebounds by Andrew Brookins and Wilson to prevail for the win.
The Vikings will travel to Battlefield High School on Tuesday to take on the Bobcats.
